💭Misconception: People with Down syndrome can’t read or write.

✅Reality: Most individuals with Down syndrome CAN learn to read and write when given early, structured, and supportive instruction. Research consistently shows that literacy skills develop best when teaching begins early, high expectations are maintained and when reading instruction is paired with speech and language therapy.

Our final highlight for National Disability Employment Awareness Month is Jeff! 🌟

Jeff has been proudly assisting customers for over 15 years at Tops Market 🛒. He enjoys having an active role, helping others, and even jumping in to stock shelves from time to time. Being employed is important to Jeff ... it gives him the opportunity to stay engaged in the community and be productive.

He has grown increasingly independent, now only meeting with his job coach for a check-in about once a month ✅. Additionally, Jeff’s job helps support his hobby - a passion for woodworking 🪵✨.

Way to go, Jeff! 👏

💭Misconception: A child with Down syndrome negatively affects their siblings.

✅Truth: Studies show the opposite! 💙💛A recent study found no long-term detrimental effects to siblings. In fact, professionals note the psychological advantages of having a Down syndrome family member. They have documented siblings have increased tolerance, greater compassion and awareness in contrast to typical siblings.
