Drewry Volunteer Fire Department

Drewry Volunteer Fire Department Drewry VFD was organized in 1963 as an auxiliary of Warrenton Rural VFD. Around 1980, the auxiliary system was dissolved. Daeke. Curtis, Jr., James Watkins, A.P.

The department had 19 charter members: C.B. Curtis, Ellis Fleming, Felix Ranes, Roger Fleming, Morris Fleming, Jr., Wilson Fleming, William Ellington, Charles Ellington, Bernard Holtzman, A.E. Liles, Paul Lancaster, Luther Kimball, Ed White, James Watkins, Vernon Whitmore, Marshall Fleming, Leonard Bender, Stanley Norwood and Kenneth Daeke. The first Drewry firehouse was housed in what was the Dre

wry school building, which the community purchased from a Mr. The fire department and the Drewry Community Club worked together to raise money for firefighting equipment and to make repairs to the building, which housed both the department and the club. The fire department began with two trucks and, in 1965, added a Dodge weapons carrier that was revamped for use as a brush truck. New apparatus and equipment have been added since then. On July 1, 1984, the firehouse burned. In October of that year, Drewry VFD moved into its present building, which was constructed at the same location on Manson Drewry Rd. In 2008, a substation on Drewry-Virginia Line Road was added to better protect the citizens of the community. The department serves Warren and Vance counties, Interstate 85 and the Kerr Lake area with firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics. Since 1963, Drewry VFD has had six chiefs: C.B. Holtzmann, Jr., Randy Curtis, Jerry Holtzman and its current chief, Charles Holtzman. The department’s business meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 8 p.m. at the main station on Manson Road. An auxiliary composed of both men and women was reactivated in recent years and supports the fire department with fund-raising activities which include fish and fried chicken plate sales on Memorial Day weekend, stews in November and February, and pork barbecue and fried chicken plate sales in October.

Last Friday, April 24th, members of Drewry VFD participated in Career Day at E.O. Young Elementary School. The kids got to walk through a fire truck, walk around the truck to see all the equipment we use, and ask questions. A fun time was had by all!

Due to dry conditions and lack of rainfall, the state-issued burn ban remains in effect statewide. Outdoor burning is prohibited but isn’t the only ignition source for wildfire, especially in high-risk conditions.

Farm equipment and machine use can also start wildfires. While working outdoors, be mindful of your equipment, and watch for sparks!

Check for and fix fire hazards before operating farm equipment or machines.
👉Remove any buildup of crop residue around the engine, exhaust system, belts and chains.
👉Repair damaged exhaust system components, worn or frayed drive belts, broken or exposed electrical wiring, worn or misaligned moving parts which can indicate a lack of lubricant, and signs of leaking fluids, oil and fuel.
👉For portable, gasoline-powered equipment, make sure you have a properly functioning spark arrester installed.

Spring wildfire season in North Carolina is in full swing, with fire activity surging statewide over the last 10 days. Since Friday, March 20, N.C. Forest Service rangers have responded to 626 wildfires across the state. Not including today, at least 114 of those fires have started since the statewide ban on open burning became effective at 6 p.m., Saturday, March 28.

“The fact that we’ve had more than 100 new fire ignitions during a statewide ban on open burning should reinforce the sense of urgency that needs to be taken with this ban,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Not a single one of the wildfires that have started since Sunday, March 29, were the result of a lightning strike or natural ignition source. That leaves most, if not all, of these ignitions as being the result of human activity, reminding us that people are the best defense against wildfire.”

Following enactment of the state ban on open burning, the N.C. Forest Service canceled nearly 18,000 digital burn permits that were issued online during the 30-day period before the ban became effective. This total does not include the burning permits that were issued in person by either the N.C. Forest Service or local burn permitting agents. Congruent with general statute, the N.C. Forest Service cancels all burn permits and suspends the issuance of new burn permits during a state-issued burn ban.
