SSJID At SSJID - the South San Joaquin Irrigation District.- we provide water for irrigation & drinking and generate clean electric power.

In 1909, the South San Joaquin Irrigation District was established to provide a reliable and economical source of irrigation water for the areas around Escalon, Manteca and Ripon. SSJID's historic water rights allow for several hydroelectric power plants on a series of dams and reservoirs on the Stanislaus River. SSJID and Oakdale Irrigation District completed the original Melones Reservoir in 192

6, and have co-owned the Tri-Dam Project, consisting of Donnells, Beardsley and Tulloch reservoirs and powerhouses since 1957. In 2005, as unprecedented urban growth replaced agricultural land, the District expanded into providing domestic water service to South San Joaquin County cities with its state-of-the-art water treatment plant. In 2009, SSJID completed a 1.4 megawatt solar farm that provides nearly all of the electricity to run its water treatment plant, and the District passes on a 15% savings on power costs to the cities who participate in the treatment plant. For several years, the District has been moving towards providing retail electric service as well, aiming to cut electric bills of those in its service territory by 15% across the board.

Golden mussels are becoming a growing threat to water systems across California, including right here in the communities we serve.

These rapidly spreading invasive species can clog pipes, damage infrastructure, and disrupt water delivery, leading to costly impacts and putting local agriculture and livelihoods at risk.

Thank you to Assemblymember Rhodesia Ransom for raising the alarm and pushing for immediate state action to protect our water supply before this threat spreads further.

Three days in Sacramento, and one thing is clear. The future of water in California is being shaped right now.

Our team just returned from the ACWA Spring Conference, where water leaders from across the state came together to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our communities. From conversations around policy and infrastructure to new ideas about sustainability and long-term planning, every discussion pointed to the same goal, securing reliable water for the generations that follow.

What happens next is what matters most. We’re bringing those ideas home and putting them into action for the people who depend on us every day.

Happy Drinking Water Week 💧

Clean, safe drinking water is one of the most reliable services you have, and it doesn’t happen by accident. It takes constant testing, careful treatment, and dedicated professionals making sure high standards are met every single day.

Join us this week in recognizing the importance of drinking water and the people who make it possible.

SSJID water keeps our communities, farms, and local economy running.

May is Water Awareness Month in California, and it’s a great time to think about how small changes at home can help protect our water supply for the seasons ahead.

Looking for a place to start? Try a few simple habits:
• Check for and repair leaks regularly
• Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth
• Only run your dishwasher and washing machine with full loads
• Water plants during early morning or evening hours

💧 Every drop matters, and it all adds up. Together, we can make a difference!

Happy Arbor Day!

Across our region, trees are part of everyday life, from orchard rows that support local agriculture to the trees that shade our neighborhoods and parks.

At SSJID, water plays an important role in helping those trees grow and thrive. It’s one of the many ways our work connects to the communities we serve.

In the heart of our community, farming is more than a livelihood. It is how fresh, local food makes its way from our fields to our families.

This National Garden Month, we are grateful to support programs like Garden Joy’s Farm to School Recipe Kits. Each month, 150 local students take home a kit filled with organic produce grown at Garden Joy and sourced from partners like Ratto Bros., along with everything they need to cook a healthy meal with their families.

Behind every ingredient is the water that makes it possible. SSJID is proud to support the farmers who help nourish our community, from the field to the kitchen table.
