Farewell to Tanya Lamo,
Extension Director
After five years of dedicated service, we bid a fond farewell to Tanya as Director of the Dare County Cooperative Extension Office. During her tenure, Tanya wore many hats - serving simultaneously as Director, Horticulture Agent, and later as Family and Consumer Sciences Agent - always with energy, creativity, and a deep commitment to our community.
Tanya provided invaluable support to the Extension Master Gardener program and initiated the Therapeutic Horticulture Program, which has been widely embraced and utilized by facilities throughout Dare County. She also led engaging activities for Dementia Caregivers Day Out, offering meaningful support to caregivers and participants alike. And her collaboration with the Dare County Arts Council for the Art and Science of Garden Journaling class continues to attract gardeners with an artistic flair.
From identifying weeds and plant diseases to teaching classes on pickles, jam, and quilting to overseeing apple pie baking and gingerbread house making contests, Tanya’s programming reflected both her versatility and passion. She also championed healthy food choices through outreach at local Outer Banks markets.
One activity especially close to Tanya’s heart was hosting the Monarch Beach Club of Dare, a day program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through a “Cookability” grant, she created opportunities for participants to build cooking skills, enjoy fellowship, and share a meal they helped prepare—an experience that embodied her belief in community, inclusion, and empowerment.
Tanya’s contributions have left a lasting impact on Dare County. Her enthusiasm, innovation, and desire to improve the lives of others will be truly missed. We wish her all the very best in her next chapter.
