There are two upcoming special permit deer hunts within Baker Park Reserve. So, we wanted to provide some context about the hunts and why they are happening!

Each winter, TRPD staff conduct an aerial deer population survey to determine how much human intervention is necessary to maintain a healthy deer population. When there is a surplus of deer, the district will conduct a Special Permit Hunt the following fall.

If the deer population is left unchecked, they will eat through young trees and brush and negatively impact plant growth. Without any predators, human deer population management is necessary to sustain a healthy ecosystem. Special Permit Hunts allow the Park District to monitor hunter contributions closely and ensure that the hunt is as safe as possible.

You can learn more about Deer Population Management and Special Permit Hunts on the Three Rivers Park District Website: https://www.threeriversparks.org/page/deer-hunts
