New Utah e-bike rules took effect in May.

If you or your child rides an e-bike, it's important to understand the new requirements before heading out on public roads.

➡️ Swipe through to learn:
• The different classes of e-bikes
• How to tell the difference between an e-bike and an electric motorcycle
• Age restrictions and rider requirements

One of the biggest changes is that some electric-powered bikes may not legally be considered e-bikes under Utah law. Depending on the vehicle, registration, insurance, licensing, or other requirements may apply.

Before you ride, take a few minutes to make sure you know what type of vehicle you have and what rules apply.

Mapleton City will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, July 8 regarding a proposed adjustment to residential solid waste collection rates.

Why is this being discussed?

Over the past several years:
• Collection costs have steadily increased
• Disposal fees have increased significantly
• Mapleton’s residential rates have remained unchanged

As a result, the Waste Collection Fund is currently operating at a deficit.

The proposed adjustment would help keep the program financially sustainable while maintaining comparable rates to neighboring communities.

The proposed rates would increase from $11.50 for the first can and $8.00 for additional cans to $14 per month for the first can and $13 per month for each additional can.

“During the winters in old Mapleton, a popular thing to do was to go ice-skating. Sometimes the older kids wanted to go in the night to skate by the light of the moon. The girls’ mothers would make pots of chili or stew, and they would all head to one of a few places they liked to skate. One was down in the Big Hollow; the pond would freeze over and make a nice area to skate. The other was the old reservoir up by the base of Maple Mountain.

Some years, the farmers would flood their fields in the winter and the water would freeze, turning the entire fields into one big ice-skating rink. The farmers weren’t always too fond of these ice-skating parties though, because in order to stay warm, the kids needed to make bonfires to huddle around when they weren’t skating. But instead of bringing their own firewood, they used the fence posts that were near the skating area. In the spring when the farmers let their livestock out, the livestock would get loose and the farmers would find that their fences had been used as firewood by the ice-skaters.”

Those who grew up in Mapleton have fond memories of their childhoods. The above memory is from Aaron Bruce Mendenhall Jr. printed in Mapleton, A Collection of Folk’s Tales by Erik C. Brinkerhoff.

Do you have memories of ice skating? Share them in the comments.
