A flyer was sent out to all landowners/residents of Sterling Township asking for opinions on what to do with the town hall building which was built in 1892. So far there have been 6 responses. This will be discussed at the August 12th meeting.Three options were given for moving forward: 1) keep things as they are, not using the hall but keeping the lights on 2) selling the hall and property it is on 3) going through the historical registry process. Let your opinions be heard so the board can make its decision with as much information as possible.

Another flyer was sent out regarding our mail-in ballot process. Please read through it. If you are not registered to vote here in BEC and Sterling Township, follow the instructions and go to the historic courthouse in Mankato at 204 S Fifth Street and register. The folks there are so helpful and will take care of you! Let your voice be heard. Vote!

Sterling Township held its annual meeting on March 12, 2024 at the Amboy Fire Department at 7PM. A "State of The Township" was presented which reveals the township is in good shape financially. Money is tucked away for future fire and rescue truck purchases for Mapleton and Amboy which provide the township with emergency and fire services. (A big "thank you " to those men and women who volunteer to provide these vital services to our communities!) The township will not be making any other big purchases this year aside from replacing the snow plow on the MAC truck. With the unusual winter the plow was barely used but still needs to be refurbished or replaced. The township's main job is making sure all of its unpaved roads are well maintained and that roadside ditches are mowed. (As a reminder, the township will not be spraying for w**ds again this year. Residents are asked to keep an eye out for noxious w**d growth on or near their property. The township will not be changing its levy once again. Which is very good news for all property owners. The 2024 semi-annual spring trash collection is scheduled for the last weekend in May, starting on Thursday afternoon, May 28. A discussion was had regarding the upkeep of the town hall. The hall is scheduled for maintenance and painting in 2025.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, April 9 at 7 P.M. at the Amboy Fire Hall conference room. For further information or questions, do not hesitate to use FB messaging. Responses will be forthcoming within 24 hours.

To: All Sterling Township Residents

From: SterlingTownship Board Members

The township board would like to remind township residents that its semi-annual trash collection will take place from September 7-10. There will be the usual three dumpsters located on the front lawn of the Old Sterling Town Hall.

As a reminder, the township will not pay for the disposal of the following items:

pressurized tanks of any kind
florescent lighting
appliances including microwaves and dehumidifiers
yard waste

any electronics
batteries
tires of any kind with or without rims
large implement tires
springed furniture including mattresses, box springs, couches, love seats, chairs
hazardous materials including paint, solvents, liquids, needles, medicine
railroad tires or pressure treated lumber

If you have any of these listed items for disposal, you must contact the Ponderosa Landfill Customer Service building. At this site, you may drop off mattresses or box springs which will then be sent to 7 Rivers Recycling in Onalaska, WI where the mattress and box springs are disassembled and recycled. 80% of the mattresses or box springs components can be recycled. The cost to drop of either of these items is $22.00. Similarly, the cost for recycling appliances is $21 for most items but furnaces, fridges and freezers cost $26 to recycle. Electronics are also recycled at the service center and are recycled through Green Tech Recycling. You must have proof of residency in order to drop off these products. The cost is $5.00 for each of the first five items and then $15 per items for all other electronics. Documents can also be brought to the center for destruction and is free to all Blue Earth County residents. Up to two banker’s boxes can be dropped off at a time. Large loads will not be accepted. All shredded paper from documents is recycled.

As a further service, Ponderosa Landfill will accept bagged garbage drop off at a cost of $6.00 for up to five bags and $11 for bags 6-10.

The township will not be raising the tax levy for 2024.
The township tabled discussion regarding the original town hall other than to state that it will need painting in 2024 or 2025. It is hoped that volunteers will help paint the building. There are no real major structural issues with the building other than the steps that may need replacing. Trim work was replaced last summer and will be painted this summer.

The township will not be spraying ditches and roadsides this summer. It is asking landowners to voluntarily work to keep w**ds at bay by spraying for w**ds themselves. The township will continue to have ditches and roadsides mowed.

The township has contracted with an outside company to haul rock for township roads in a cost savings measure.

The township began a discussion regarding the replacement of the township dump truck and plow. Most new plows are computer operated and would be difficult to retrofit into the old truck. The township board will be researching the cost of a new truck and plow for possibly the winter of 2025.

The next annual town hall meeting will take place on March 12, 2024.
