Drowning is preventable. It can happen in seconds and often without a sound. With a few simple precautions, we can all help reduce the risk and protect our communities.

Water Safety Tips to Remember:
🛟 Life jackets save lives. Be sure they match the user’s chest size and weight.

🧪 Chlorine doesn’t kill germs instantly. Some germs can survive in properly treated water for days. Avoid swallowing water.

🚿 Shower before swimming. Sweat and dirt can reduce chlorine’s effectiveness.

⏰ Take breaks with children. Check diapers and take regular bathroom trips.

👓 Supervise actively. Stay close and avoid distractions—drowning is fast and silent.

🚨 Know how to respond. Learn CPR and how to recognize swimmers in distress.

📚 Teach swimming skills. Lessons reduce risk, but supervision is always needed.

Maplewood Farmer's Market is back with fresh food and local vendors, and the Health Dept. is getting in on the action with free Mobile Health Screenings. Look for the van, provided by RWJ Barnabas & Essex County’s Office of Public Health Management, on the first Monday of every month, from 2 - 5 pm. They'll be offering free blood pressure checks, diabetes and cholesterol screenings, and health education.

Have you registered your pet? ⌛️ Township ordinance calls for all Dogs & Cats in Maplewood to be registered and to show proof of rabies vaccination. Licenses must be renewed every January.

The fees help support the township’s animal control efforts, animal sheltering and testing for suspected rabid wildlife. For more info call us during regular business hours (973)762-8120 ext. 2006 ☎️

Did you know Maplewood has monthly visits from Essex County’s Substance Use Disorder Mobile Outreach Van? You’ll typically find it outside of our Community Food Shed at the corner of Springfield Ave & Indiana St. on the last Wednesday of every month. This month, you can find the team there on Wednesday May 28th from 10 AM - 2 PM! 🚐👀
