Research shows that to the extent that self-sufficiency is a marker of ones successful transition to adulthood, young people aging out of foster care are not fairing well. However, foster youth emerge from foster care with uncommon resilience and their potential must be tapped. According to the Association for Children of New Jersey, college scholarships, housing, counseling and financial supports

help youth make transition to independent living and programs that offer these services, give young people aging out of foster care the chance to become successful adults. With the appropriate peer and adult connections and targeted support every young person’s potential can be nurtured and directed. Young people in foster care lack the natural opportunities for learning decision-making, community engagement, and leadership skills ideally in a family setting and they experience a sense of powerlessness and isolation. The intentional creation of leadership and engagement opportunities is therefore particularly important for this group of young people. Programs And Services
