We are in need of large fish for Rita the bald eagle! Like most birds in captivity, Rita can be a picky eater so we like to have a variety of fish on hand. She is good about eating all types of snapper (esp mangrove and yellowtail), but she’ll also devour large grunts and blue runners. We have lots of meat and rodents in the freezer, but would like to stock up on large fish. Size matters so make it 10-12”. Smaller and it will be going to the vultures. If you can deliver it to the bird center at Crane Point “fresh is best”, but frozen is AOK. If you can’t bring it on ice then give us a heads up and we’ll leave a cooler of ice by our after hours drop-off cage. This spot is located directly across the street from McDonald’s. For more information, please call Kelly at (305)393-3495. 🦅

Some Good Samaritans were able to capture this immature double-crested cormorant on Long Key after noticing that it had monofilament fishing line with a small swivel hanging out of its mouth. Our handheld scanner indicated there was metal inside the bird so we plopped it on the table for a quick pic. As we were simply confirming the presence of metal the bird was swaddled in a towel rather fully anesthetized for the pic. To our SURPRISE! there are not 1, but 5 hooks inside this poor bird. The prognosis is not good, but we’re going to do our best to make him strong enough for a surgery to remove this mess of metal. Please pick up any fish hooks and fishing line you come across…even if it’s not yours! 🕊️ We do what we do with DONATIONS from you! Donate via VENMO or visit www.marathonwildbirdcenter.org. 🕊️

Do you live outside of the Florida Keys or know someone who does? These two beautiful roosters need a new home. Call us at (305)743-8382. These boys are only a couple of months old and, oh, so handsome!

Yellow-billed cuckoos eat caterpillars and that’s a hard thing to serve up on a platter in rehab! This adult cuckoo arrived on May 10th from Sunshine Key. It was thin, most likely from migration, and in need of some R&R. Lucky for us — because cuckoos are notoriously hard to get to self-feed — it was a huge fan of live mealworms and eventually even started eating some defrosted crickets. Today, volunteer CeCe released this fat and sassy bird into the hammock! 🕊️ We do what we do with DONATIONS from you! 🕊️ Donate via VENMO or visit www.marathonwildbirdcenter.org. 🕊️
