MK3 Gil departed Station Marathon last week. He was a crucial member in the engineering department and non compliant vessel crew. MK3 was a qualified Pursuit Crewman, RBM engineer, Translator, Boarding Team Member, and Fi****ms Coach. He responded to 14 search and rescue cases and 16 law enforcement cases. Most notably he responded to 34 Cuban migrants in the water 12 nm offshore Marathon. His quick thinking and diligence ensured that everyone was safely accounted for. He provided first aid and was the primary translator on scene. MK3 Gil also worked outside his department to assist the deckies and MWR cottages onboard station. Bravo Zulu shipmate!

Last week, Station Marathon said goodbye to BM2 Myrick. BM2 was stationed at Marathon from January 2021 to June 2024. In his time at station he completed 450 missions totaling 1,240 underway hours. He led 56 Search and Rescue missions which led to 32 lives saved and 120 assisted. He interdicted 1,100 migrants saving them from rustic unseaworthy vessels. He saved 12 sea turtles and released 60 hatchlings. BM2 earned complex qualifications such as OOD, Pursuit Coxswain, and DT/OPFOR. He was a legendary leader at station and will be missed dearly by the crew. Station Emerald Isle is lucky to have him. Fair winds and following seas shipmate.

Happy Second Day of Safe Boating Week!

One of the most important aspects of safe boating is maintaining a proper lookout. Friday a Good Samaritan spotted an entangled sea turtle while underway. They called the Turtle Hospital and remained on scene with the turtle. Our small boat got on scene and transferred the female green sea turtle “Silver Myrick” to the Turtle Hospital.

During sea turtle nesting season more turtles will be closer to shore and the surface of the water.

As prudent mariners maintaining a proper lookout prevents boat collisions and keeps the captain aware of their surroundings.

Today is the first day of National Safe Boating Week!

With the upcoming busy Memorial Day weekend it’s important to check your safety equipment, create a float plan, maintain a vigilant lookout, and wear your life jacket.

It’s important to have a proper fitting life jacket for all people onboard, adult life jackets do not fit children, and there are even life jackets for your pets.

The top five factors in boating accidents and deaths: Operators inattentiveness, Operator inexperience, improper lookout, excessive speed, and machinery failure.

Come on down to West Marine, Home Depot, and Publix this weekend to meet with members of our crew to discuss boating safety.
