Just heard on the news this morning that learning experts are raising the alarm on trying to educate children completely online. He said that a screen is too limiting and our minds don't work that way. A page of a book does not move and yet is incorporated into it's surroundings differently and children absorb much better from the physical book. So Libraries are more important than ever YEAH!!! And...we do have computers for when you need them. Stop by and see YOUR library.

Good Morning Library Patrons!

We are excited to announce that the Bollinger County Collective Archives has released five video interviews featuring Bollinger County's very own, Mildred Bess Shell!
And since today would of been Mildred's 107th birthday so what better way to celebrate her life than by sharing her stories!

Blue Creek Studio in Patton recorded over two hours Mildred's stories. From there It's been a long road to edit and complete these videos. Justin Dambach produced the five, approximately, 10-minute videos from the original interview and still photographs shared by Dotta Roberts. Along with the 5 newest videos, the YouTube channel also contains two older video projects. Justin improved the audio and inserted some split screens showing the photos that were projected on the wall during the 2017 "Fireside Chat" video with Mildred. The Legacy of Will Mayfield video that Randy McWilson completed for us in 2021 is also hosted on our channel.

We invite everyone to please check out these videos and get a chance to listen to one of Bollinger County's most prominent residents as she shares her stories from yesteryear.

Oh my goodness where has this week gone? I wanted to thank everyone for a fantastic summer reading program. I don't think we wore anyone out on fascinating dinosaur projects. We had 85 participants from birth to 18 and in a nine week period they read over 8,000 books. We made fossil sculptures, cookie cutter dinos out of soft tootsie rolls, a time capsule that will be opened 25 years from now, and a dino island out of playdoh along with several other fun activities. Thanks goes out to Moms and Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas for getting the young ones here, helping us out with extra pairs of hands and patience with us when it seemed a little chaotic. That's what summer is for isn't it?
Another big thank you goes to Mr. Daniel and his crew at Whippoorwill Lake and Campground for allowing us to use his beautiful setting for our end of summer picnic and swimming. Add hotdogs and fresh air and you can't lose Also, please thank your local McDonalds folks for their McReader's program that allowed our youngsters to have a free happy meal for every ten books they read. And...prizes. The grand prize winners this year outdid themselves. In the birth to 6 age group, Miss Avery Huffman, age 5, had a lot of help from her brother, sister, Grandma and Mom in reading 940 books. That is an all time record for our library. She received a six person tent as her prize. Our reading champion for the 7-11 age group was Mr. DJ Beard. He did an amazing job of reading 460 books this summer and he likewise got a six person tent as his prize. In our 12-18 year old group, Miss Angel Beard took top honors with a total of 700 books. At that age it is difficult to pick a prize they will like so we got Angel a $60 gift card to Wal-Mart just in time to find lots of goodies before school starts. These young readers give all us old folks a lot of hope for the future of this world when they work this hard in one summer. Don't forget that we continue with our regular story hour each Wednesday at 10:30 throughout the rest of the year. We don't have prizes but we do have stories and a lot of activities and crafts geared around whole family participation. Enjoy these last few days of summer and Bless all for a great new school year.

Preface: Most librarians who have been around a long time have what we call "library kids." Those are the young ones that come into the library, very earnestly find just the right books and actually read them and come back the next week for some more. You watch them grow and and turn into young adults and then adults who maintain their love of reading.

What does that same librarian do when one of her library kids, whose family has moved to pursue careers, comes back in, two feet taller with a brand new book hot off the presses that he has written. You give him a great big hug and you talk to him like it's just been a few days since you've seen him.

That young man is Sam Ferrell and his love of reading has joined a love of writing. He has a series in mind that follows a young Henry Walker through the untamed land of Montana to the Whitmoore Ranch which is a great place to start over. Hard work builds trust but even the strongest foundations can be tested. Out on the frontier, nothing stays buried forever. I started reading the first few pages and Sam paints a very good picture with words. Can't wait to finish it. The only problem with finishing it is that we have to wait a couple months for the next one... You also might recognize, Mom (Tasha Ferrell) and Grandma Penny Dowd.

I am cataloging it for check out now so come check it out and I asked Tasha how you can buy it. They have some copies preprinted so if you want one, either text 660-287-5081 or email [email protected] and they will send you one. Woohoo, this has been a great day!

Good Afternoon Library Patrons!
As we come to the end of this year's Summer Reading Program, we would like to thank all the kiddos and their families for participating, our library staff for all work put into the program and a special thank you to McDonald's and Hilburn-Vaini McDonald's for once again sponsoring the McReader Program! Thanks to this program each child earned a free happy meal for every 10 books they read!

As a reminder, all Summer Reading forms are due Friday July 24th and our annual Summer Reading Picnic will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday July 29th at Whippoorwill Lake!

Thank you again to all that participated, making this year another success!

The 2026 Bollinger County Dinosaur Hunt has officially begun!

From July 13–31, families are invited to explore Marble Hill and hunt for hidden dinosaurs at participating local businesses. It’s a fun, FREE adventure that encourages everyone to discover the amazing shops, restaurants, and attractions that make Bollinger County special.

Here’s how to play:

We have some great resources here at the Library that are funded through your state and federal tax dollars. If you go to our webpage at bocolib.com, you will find resources that will give you practice tests for medical, mechanical and tech careers. http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=ip,cpid&custid=s9130487&group=main You will find career resources, Heritage Quest for genealogy, GED classes online, research resources and two of my favorites: Ebsco ebooks and Save our history. When someone asks if we have ebooks like many libraries have that you can either read online or download, I usually tell them no but there is a little known database that resides on the ebsco database link on our homepage that has a large collection of books that are available if you have a library card. Many of these are not the newest bestsellers but there are a lot of fiction, biographies and non-fiction titles to take a look at. And you will need the long version of your card to use it so call if you don't know that number. My second favorite link on our page is Save our History. That is the start of what I hope becomes a monumental archive of all things and people of Bollinger County through the ages. https://hub.catalogit.app/16235 Since the weather is supposed to be either rainy or hot, take a break and check out these great resources!
