The Marblehead Police Department is a thirty-member Civil Service law- enforcement agency sworn to protect the residents, merchants, and visitors in a seacoast community north of Boston, MA. Department staff consists of a chief, captain, four lieutenants, four sergeants, and twenty officers who patrol the community in three shifts, twenty-four hours a day seven days a week. Uniformed officers patr

ol the town by marked and unmarked patrol cars, motorcycle, mountain bike, and walking beats. One of the sergeants and one patrol officer work as plain-clothes detectives. One sergeant is assigned on a regular basis as the court liaison to the Lynn District Court. Three officers are assigned to a regional mutual aid unit that provides rapid law enforcement assistance to over sixty area communities. Eight highly-skilled civilians trained and certified as dispatchers by the state operate our state-of-the-art 911 center located inside a secured wing in police headquarters. These men and women handle emergency and non-emergency phone calls and monitor multiple public safety, public utility, and marine-radio frequencies and assist walk-in lobby traffic. An administrative assistant to the chief and a custodian, round out the department’s regular staff. Accountability for the town’s Animal Control division and the school traffic supervisors (crossing guards) is also delegated to the police chief. Police headquarters was originally located in the historic Old Town House on lower Washington Street. In 1961, a more modernized station was opened at its current centralized location on Gerry Street. This building also houses the prisoner lock-up which consists of four adult cells and two combination female/juvenile cells. For decades, the department provided a BLS (Basic Life Support-EMT staffed) ambulance service, as well as a police-operated harbor patrol boat that provided supervision and assistance for people utilizing the harbors and ocean waters surrounding Marblehead. After years of faithful service, both programs were disbanded as part of budget consolidations in the mid-’90s.

Kicking Off the Summer Season at Crowninshield and Gerry Islands: To the Members of Our Community:

With the advent of warm weather, more and more of you will be getting out on the town’s wonderful open spaces including Crowninshield and Gerry Islands, owned and managed by The Trustees of Reservations. In partnership with The Trustees, we’d like to remind community members visiting the islands to be mindful of their impact on both the islands and the tightly knit neighborhood that overlooks them.

There is limited public parking, so please be aware of parking restrictions to ensure that neighborhood residents and emergency responders have easy access. Whether accessing the island by boat or on foot, please be aware that the islands are open to the public from sunrise to sunset daily. Visitors are reminded that alcohol is not permitted. Please carry off trash and be aware that restrooms are not available for either island.

The Marblehead Police Department and Harbormaster’s Office work together to ensure the safety of those on the waterways and using our open space resources. We encourage neighborhood residents and visitors to contact the Marblehead Police Department if activity is observed that runs contrary to those protections. With your help we can ensure that these unique and fragile coastal resources continue to thrive. We look forward to another great season of outdoor activities in Marblehead.

Police Chief – Dennis King

Harbormaster- Mark Souza

Town Administrator – Thatcher W. Kezer III

Jeremy Dick – Regional Stewardship Manager for The Trustees

Marblehead Police Seeking Public Assistance with Vandalism at High School Football Field: Vehicles Drove Recklessly Across Field; One Car Later Recovered Unoccupied at Grace Oliver’s Beach

MARBLEHEAD — Chief Dennis King and the Marblehead Police Department ask the public to share any information they may have about a Wednesday morning incident in which the Marblehead High School football field was damaged.

At about 5:40 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, Marblehead Police responded to 2 Humphrey Ave. for a report that a vehicle had driven on Piper Football Field. Officers observed damage to the access gate of the field, as well as marks on the field that indicated vehicles had driven across it. The field did not sustain significant damage.

In a preliminary investigation, Marblehead Police determined that two vehicles were involved, and were able to get a description of both vehicles.

At about 11:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Marblehead Police responded to Grace Oliver’s Beach for report of a vehicle submerged in the water. Marblehead Police, with assistance from the Marblehead Harbormaster, immediately responded. An initial examination of the vehicle determined it was unoccupied. The Salem Police Dive Team was requested to assist.

The vehicle matched the description of one of the vehicles believed to be involved with the incident at the football field. An investigation determined that the vehicle was reported stolen. At this time, Marblehead Police believe that the two incidents are connected.

Marblehead Police is actively investigating to identify the person, or people, responsible. The investigation is being treated as a criminal matter, and police intend to issue charges.

Marblehead Police ask anyone who believes they have information that may assist the department’s investigation contact to the Marblehead Police Department at 781-631-1212, Det. Sgt. Sean Brady, [email protected], or School Resource Officer Sean Sweeney Jr., [email protected].

Yearly Reminder – Gas Powered Leaf Blower BAN starts May 25th, 2026: To the members of our community:

As you know, the Massachusetts Attorney General has approved the Marblehead Leaf Blower ban from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Many will ask “can I report violators now to the Marblehead Police and Health Departments”. The answer is “Yes”. The Bylaw, and enforcement mechanism are both in place, and will allow for violators to be addressed. Note: Response time may be affected by priority emergency calls.

Homeowners are responsible for the fines- BUT landscapers in violation of the Bylaw will be required to stop. Willful Violation of a Town Bylaw is a violation of G.L. c. 272 §59.

Marblehead Police Share “Focused on Recovery” a Six-Week Virtual Series on Addiction and Recovery Facilitated by the Marblehead and Swampscott Public Health Departments: The Marblehead Police Department would like to share that the Public Health Departments of Marblehead and Swampscott will be hosting a second free virtual community education series to foster understanding, reduce the stigma and strengthen community responses to substance use disorders.

Every other Thursday from June 4 to July 30, community members can participate in a six-week course that explores topics related to addiction and recovery, including conversations on defining and entering substance abuse recovery, pathways to recovery, and available support and resources.

The sessions, which are facilitated by Marblehead Police Department Co-Responder & Licensed Mental Health Clinician Gina Rabbitt and Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor Michelle Simons, are open to the public and aim to create a welcoming, judgement-free space for learning and discussion.

This is the second time the sessions have been offered. The first session, which was held in February, received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants.

To learn more, contact Gina Rabbitt, [email protected] or Michelle Simons, [email protected].
