Trivia Tuesday answer: if you guessed B (and most of you did) then you are correct!

So why does that matter?

Many of the costs utilities pay are influenced not just by how much electricity is used, but by when it is used. During peak demand events, when air conditioners are running across New England and electricity use is at its highest, the cost of power, transmission, and capacity can increase significantly.

Having local generation available during those critical periods helps MMLD reduce its reliance on expensive market power and supports grid reliability when demand is at its highest. It is one of the tools we use to help keep rates affordable while ensuring electricity is available when customers need it most.

🌡️ It might not feel like it yet, but warmer temperatures are just around the corner, and with them come summer peak demand events. During periods of high electricity use, ISO New England may issue peak alerts and call on utilities across the region to help reduce strain on the grid. One of the tools MMLD has available is the Wilkins plant.

More than a quarter of MMLD’s employees are veterans who continue to serve our community each and every day. While Memorial Day has now passed, we want to once again recognize and honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country, as well as the veterans who continue to dedicate themselves to public service here at home.

MMLD MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY OFFICE CLOSURE NOTIFICATION

The Marblehead Municipal Light Department will be closed on Monday, May 25th, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. We will reopen on Tuesday at 7:30am.

We’re seeing a brief stretch of warmer weather this week as we start to ease into the summer season.

While this isn’t a peak alert, it’s a good reminder that as temperatures rise, so does regional electricity demand. With broader weather patterns pointing toward a warmer season ahead, small changes at home can go a long way in helping reduce strain on the system and keep wholesale costs in check.

A few easy ways to help:
• Pre-cool your home earlier in the day
• Raise your thermostat a couple of degrees
• Hold off on running appliances like dryers and dishwashers during late afternoon hours, particularly during 5-8 PM
• Use blinds or curtains to keep the sun out
• Use fans to stay comfortable while reducing AC use

When a lot of customers make small adjustments, it adds up in a big way.
