Honoring 25 Years of Courage and Sacrifice

The Marco Island Police Department, in collaboration with Marco Island Fire Rescue, is proud to unveil the next release in our community sticker series.

This special sticker commemorates the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, and honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the first responders who ran toward danger and all those whose lives were forever changed.

This tribute carries an especially personal meaning for our departments. Several members of our public safety family previously served with the New York City Police Department or New York City Fire Department and answered the call on that tragic day. Their courage, service and firsthand connection to September 11 remain an important part of who we are today.

We will never forget.

🐢 Sea Turtle Season Update | Marco Island

Sea turtle season is still going strong on Marco Island, and the latest numbers show plenty of activity on our beaches.

From Aug. 24-30, Marco Island reported 170 total nests so far this season, compared with 118 at this time last year. We have also seen 251 false crawls and 101 nests hatch, compared with 68 hatched nests last year.

As more nests begin to hatch, we’re asking everyone to help keep Marco Island’s beaches safe for sea turtles and hatchlings.

Please remember to turn off or shield lights visible from the beach at night, remove chairs and other beach equipment before leaving, fill in holes and knock down sandcastles, and never touch or interfere with a nesting turtle or hatchling.

The latest report also shows 13 disorientation incidents on Marco Island, which is an important reminder that artificial lighting can send hatchlings in the wrong direction instead of toward the Gulf.

Let’s continue doing our part to keep Marco Island’s beaches clean, dark and safe for our sea turtles. 🌊🐢

Protect Our Owls: Choose Wildlife-Safe Rodent Control

Marco Island is home to the second-largest population of burrowing owls in the state of Florida – the island plays a key role in their conservation. Burrowing owls are well-loved by the community and are the focus of Audubon Western Everglades' (AWE) Owl Watch program, which celebrated 10 years of owl monitoring and research last year.

After tracking high mortality, AWE Owl Watch discovered that burrowing owls were dying of rat poison in their systems. The City of Marco Island has taken the incredible step in removing rat poison from all city properties! Additionally, sealing buildings is an important step in prevention and a long-term solution for both residential and commercial buildings.

Help protect our Burrowing Owls by using pet safe and people safe options to address rodents on your property. If you have questions about how to do this, contact the City’s environmental planner Amber Stonik, or reach out to our partners at Audubon at [email protected].

LICENSE PLATE READER UPDATE

The City of Marco Island would like to clarify recent questions about automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras and a memorandum issued by the Florida Department of Transportation.

The Marco Island Police Department does not use Flock cameras. MIPD uses a different ALPR system, with cameras located on City roads at or near the entrances and exits of the Island.

These cameras help alert officers when a license plate is linked to a stolen vehicle, a wanted or missing person, or other documented law enforcement concerns.

The City has reviewed the recent FDOT memorandum in coordination with the City Attorney. The memorandum applies to license plate readers located within rights of way on the State of Florida Highway System. It does not apply to MIPD’s ALPR cameras, which are located on City roads.

We understand residents may have questions about this technology and want to ensure the community has clear and accurate information.

⚡ LCEC WORK NOTICE

The City of Marco Island has been notified that LCEC crews will perform work near 600 S. Collier Blvd. on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Work is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m., with LCEC crews expected on-site around 8:30 a.m. Crews will replace a piece of electrical equipment.

Please use caution while traveling through the area and watch for workers and service vehicles.

The City of Marco Island is proud to congratulate our Human Resources Director, Diana Snover, MSHR, who was honored with a Hero’s Award today at the Collier County Emergency Readiness Summit!

Diana received the award for her lifesaving actions when a patron collapsed at a local restaurant. Without hesitation, she stepped in and began performing CPR, continuing chest compressions until first responders arrived. Her quick thinking, training and willingness to act helped save a life.

Diana’s actions are an important reminder of the critical role bystander CPR can play during a cardiac emergency. The minutes before first responders arrive matter, and immediate chest compressions can help keep blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs until advanced care arrives.

Congratulations, Diana, on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for stepping up when every second counted!
