Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens,’ or black mondo grass

This grass is a clumping plant with thick tufts of arching black leaves. The strappy leaves are about 12 inches long when mature. Plants send out racemes to form little baby plants over time. In late spring to early summer, racemes of pink bell-like flowers appear. From these, bluish-black berries form.

Mondo grass is evergreen, deer and rabbit resistant, and even salt and drought tolerant once established. The plant is hardy to USDA zones 5-10. There are a few types of mondo grass, but the black variety brings an interesting color note to the landscape that really sets off other plant hues. It is useful in full to partial shade sites.

Golden Variegated Sweet Flag
Acorus Ogon

Tufted golden variegated sweet grass. With contrasting green and yellow blades, this Acorus provides beauty to the garden. This non-invasive grass prefers moist conditions. A favorite variety for mixed plantings.

Uses: Containers, Mass Plantings, Water Gardens

Sun to Part Sun

Zone 5-11

Height 10-14″

Because of its attractive foliage, Variegated Sweet Flag is often used as an accent plant in moist to wet sites or in standing water. To grow in water gardens, plant rhizomes slightly below the soil surface in moist soils at the water's edge or in containers set in shallow water.

🐝HAPPY VALENTINES DAY💕🐝

There are many hearts in the garden besides my own.

💗The Dicentra specabilis, the bleeding heart, is one of the most beautiful and comes in white also.

In addition, there is the long blooming Dicentra eximia.

💗Other hearts  are purposeful such as this planting bed in the garden of my neighbors, The Dynamic Duo.

Some hearts express the sentiment while remaining cold to the touch.

They are all wonderful symbols.

For, what is life without love.  They are all quite buried under snow but the occasion of Valentine's Day has allowed me to look at the beauty that is past and the pictures which prove that there is hope lying dormant, waiting for warmth.

💕🐝🪴Don't let your love lie dormant today or any day.  Give the ones you love a simple hug.🐝💕

Happy Valentine's Day from RIVER VIEW PLANTS & NURSERY.

CLOSED through MONDAY see you ALL on TUESDAY😀🪴🐝💕

Love would never be a promise of a rose garden unless it is showered with light of faith, water of sincerity, and air of passion.

My Morning SURPRISE as it flew past my kitchen window on a WORM HUNT MISSION🪱while watering my ORCHIDS🤗🪴🐝Their SIZE always seems to catch me off guard.

Below is a little information about them and how you can attract them to your Backyards.

🪱Northern Flickers:

Northern Flickers are a fairly large woodpecker with unique coloration that varies slightly by geographic location. Measuring approximately 11.5 inches in length, flickers feature a slim rounded head, a long slightly downcurved bill, and a longer flared tail that tapers to a point.

These woodpeckers are a dusty taupe overall with richly patterned black spots, bars, and crescents on their backs and undersides and a black bib underneath their necks.

In the west their undersides of the wing and tail feathers have a red tint and the cheek patches are also red.

🪱Attracting Northern Flickers to Your Feeder:

Flickers typically reside in open habitats close to stands of trees. This includes areas like woodlands, wood edges, yards, and parks. In the West they can be found in mountain forests all the way up to the tree line.

As with other woodpeckers and insect eating birds, suet is a safe bet when trying to attract these spotted visitors. Suet feeders with extended bases provide space for these bottom-heavy birds to prop their tail for comfortable feeding, much like they would naturally on the trunk of a tree.

Peanuts and black oil sunflower are also favorites of the Northern Flicker. These can be fed in an open tray feeder to allow ample space for these larger birds to feed comfortably. I converted an old birdbath into an OPEN FEEDER for Black Sunflower seeds🤗🪴🐝

This is soooo important-- Since birds get only roughly 25% of their nutritional needs from feeders, it is important to remember to try to limit the use of broad spectrum pesticides and when possible leave larger dying or dead trees standing to help provide natural sources for the insects that make up a large portion of this bird's diet.

***For those of us along the MOHAWK RIVERS edge or aling a Timbered Edge, this is much easier to do. We all know the harmful insects that DEAD & DYING TREES attract so I'm not incouraging you to leave those standing due to a long list of disastrous reasons.😬

Flickers also eat berries and seeds, especially in winter months. Including plants such as dogwood, sumac, wild cherry and grape, bayberries, hackberries, or elderberries in your landscape can also help to provide additional food sources and keep these birds close by.

Visit RIVER VIEW PLANTS 🪴 this Spring and check out their selection of these plants to add to your Landscape🤗🪴🐝

Nesting:🪹

Northern Flickers typically excavate nest holes in dead or diseased tree trunks or large branches. Because of this, look for nest cavities in tree species which are more susceptible to a heart rot, like Aspen or Alder, which makes for easy excavation.

Unlike many woodpeckers, flickers will often reuse cavities that were excavated in a previous year. Nests are generally placed 6-15 feet off the ground, but can be located significantly higher in some cases.

Both male and female help with nest excavation, creating an entry hole roughly 3 inches in diameter with a cavity between 13 and 16 inches in depth which is left bare with the exception of a bed of wood chips for eggs to rest on.

Eggs range from 0.8-1.4 inches in length and 0.6-1.3 inches in width and are solid white. Typically clutches contain between 5 to 8 eggs and hatch within 14 days. Young will remain in the nest four roughly 4 weeks before fledging.

Have YOU spotted FLICKAS in your yard this Winter?

02/01/2025

Well the MONTH of JANUARY seemed to pass quickly. Now it's FEBRUARY and there are several things that can be done in your Garden this Month🤗🪴🐝

The month of February can be a bit of a challenge for gardeners in the Pacific Northwest.

During this month we often have some of our coldest days, lots of rain, and a few days of snow.

When it’s one of the clear, cold days of this month, bundle up and head outside to tackle a few of these items.

Just remember where you planted all those bulbs in the fall, and avoid stepping on super-saturated soils; it can destroy the soil structure and create more problems down the road.

🪴Visit local nurseries for the best selection of bare-root trees and shrubs. Many local nurseries and garden centers carry a great selection of ornamental and fruiting trees and shrubs.

🪴Prune your roses. Late February is the time to prune roses in the Pacific Northwest. Many gardeners use President’s Day as a marker.

🪴Add witch hazels to your garden. Their bright, cheery blooms are a great reminder that spring is coming. February is a great time to select witch hazels.

🪴Start with slug and snail treatments this month if they have been a problem in the past. The tiniest of slugs will make your hostas, lilies, and dahlias look like Swiss cheese very quickly. 😬

🪴Prune your hydrangeas. Make sure you’re aware of the type of hydrangea you have in your garden.

Hydrangea pruning methods vary greatly depending on the species. Incorrect pruning can lead to a year without flowers or—best case scenario—very late flowers.

🌸Smooth hydrangeas-- the ground to ensure that strong new stems will bloom on new growth in the same season.

🌸Bigleaf hydrangeas-- should only be pruned gently, as they bloom on old wood. Remove last year’s flowers, and prune to the first or second set of buds.

🌸Panicle hydrangeas-- can be pruned to suit the size of the space and will bloom on the current season’s growth.
