ALS of Utica offers an Estate Planning Grant for local registered ALS families through partnerships with local Elder Law Attorneys. After an ALS diagnosis, it’s critical to begin planning early. Many families are unaware that Medicare and standard insurance often do not cover long-term home care needs. Through this program, families may receive assistance with services such as wills, health care proxy, power of attorney, Medicaid planning and asset protection.

ALS of Utica pays approved attorneys directly on behalf of eligible families to help ease the financial burden during an already difficult time.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms who are with us today, and to those watching over us from heaven. 💙

Today, we also remember Carolyn DePerno, who lost her battle with ALS in 1999. In her memory, her daughter-in-law, Sherry DePerno, turned heartbreak into purpose by founding ALS of Utica.

Because of Sherry’s compassion, dedication, and tireless work over the years, countless families facing ALS have found support, resources, comfort, and a community that understands. What started from one family’s loss has become a source of hope for so many across our area.

Today, we honor Carolyn’s memory and thank Sherry for all she has done to make ALS of Utica what it is today. 💙

Did you know May is ALS Awareness Month? đź’™

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis—often called Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Over time, the brain loses the ability to communicate with the muscles, leading to loss of movement, difficulty speaking and swallowing, challenges with breathing and more.

ALS affects the body... but not the mind. Many people living with ALS remain fully aware as the disease progresses.
