BWJFD would like to congratulate Chief Lovell for successfully completing the Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue course hosted by Morgantown Fire Department at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Franklin, Indiana.
This three-day training focused on the unique challenges emergency responders face when rescuing large animals such as horses and livestock. Unlike many standard rescue calls, large animal incidents require responders to understand animal behavior, scene control, responder safety, owner involvement, and the safest way to move or lift an animal without causing further injury.
The course included hands-on training with realistic rescue scenarios, including the use of a 900-pound horse mannequin to practice lifting, movement, and rescue techniques. Training covered situations such as animals trapped in mud, ditches, holes, rolled over trailers, confined spaces, or other hazardous areas where normal rescue methods may not be safe or effective.
Large animal rescue is especially important in rural communities like ours, where farms, livestock, horse trailers, and agricultural properties are part of everyday life. Training like this helps BWJFD continue to evaluate and expand the services we can provide to our community while keeping responders, animal owners, and the animals themselves as safe as possible.
Congratulations on a job well done!
