🚲 🚨 LONGPORT COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT: NEW NJ E-BIKE LAWS 🚨🚲
As we gear up for a busy summer on the coast, the Longport Police Department wants to ensure all residents and visitors are aware of major statewide changes to electric bicycle regulations.
Beginning July 19, 2026, full enforcement will take effect across New Jersey for updated e-bike mandates. To keep our coastal roadways and walkways safe, original state-enforced requirements are now standard for e-bike operation.
Here is what you need to know before you ride:
📋 What is Required
Valid Licensure: Operators must hold a valid driver's license (ages 17+) or a specialized motorized bicycle license/permit through the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (ages 15–16).
MVC Registration: All e-bikes must be officially registered with the NJ MVC. (Note: Registration fees are waived by the state for the first year).
Liability Insurance: Riders are required to carry and maintain valid liability insurance coverage specifically for their e-bike.
🛑 Strict Prohibitions
Age Limit: Anyone under the age of 15 is strictly prohibited from operating an e-bike on public roadways.
Speed Modifications: Aftermarket modification kits designed to increase e-bike speeds beyond factory limits are completely illegal.
⚠️ Important Reminder: These updated regulations apply to ALL e-bike classes under the new state framework. Please ensure your equipment is fully compliant before the July deadline.
Let’s look out for one another on the road. Stay educated, ride legally, and help us keep Longport’s streets safe for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike!
