S.R. 71 crews initiated the preparation for paving activities by excavating unsuitable soil, as shown in the below picture. This essential step involved removing the unsuitable material to prepare the site for the placement of embankment material, ensuring a strong foundation for the roadway. In the after picture, the transformation is clear: the stabilized subgrade has been successfully compacted, and a limerock base is in place.

Crews on S.R. 71 are working to move and compact the stabilized subgrade before applying a 10-inch layer of limerock base. This limerock base serves as a critical foundation beneath the asphalt. Together, these materials create a long-lasting stratum of material that effectively resists deformation and degradation over time.

A sheepsfoot roller is used to effectively compact the embankment material. The roller’s “feet” compact the material at greater depths, providing superior results compared to traditional drum rollers, especially in cohesive soils. Did you know? The roller’s feet help to eliminate air pockets in the silty clay soils, which is crucial to achieving a solid and stable base for roadway construction.

S.R. 71 crews continue work between Jasmine Drive and Camellia Drive to widen the roadway to accommodate a 12-foot-wide center left-turn lane. After the crews have removed unsuitable soil and embankment material has been added, the subgrade is then stabilized. Stabilized subgrade is a layer of soil beneath the limerock base that provides enhanced soil stability, strength, and load-bearing capacity. A dump truck delivers embankment and subgrade material, which the crew then uses bulldozers to distribute throughout the work zone.

Utility crews continue utility pole relocation activities near Camellia Drive. To achieve the correct roadway elevation, crews perform cut and fill activities. This process involves an excavator operator (see photo) removing soil in high elevation areas (cut) and placing soil in low lying areas (fill) to create the required grade and elevation height per design specifications.

A reminder to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) encourages motorist to obey the speed limit. Speeding endangers everyone on the road. Speeding can affect your safety even when you are driving at the speed limit but too fast for road conditions, such as during bad weather, when a road is under repair, or in an area at night that isn’t well lit.

Resurfacing activities include improving the drainage system between Odom Road and Dogwood Drive. A cross drain consisting of eight-foot-long drainage pipe sections is placed beneath S.R. 71 near Jasmine Drive. This work is part of a stormwater drainage pipe network located on the east side of S.R. 71 (see photo). The underground system helps channel excess rain and groundwater away from the roadway. When the resurfacing work is complete, an attractive jet-black asphalt roadway will provide a smooth travel surface for motorists. The resurfacing project is scheduled for completion early 2025.
