The Jackson County Board of County Commissioners is currently seeking one qualified citizen member to serve on the Value Adjustment Board (VAB), a quasi-judicial board that hears appeals related to property tax assessments, exemptions, and classifications. Keep in mind this is just a 1-year term, unless the board chooses to appoint the same person every year. To be eligible, applicants must:
Own homestead property in Jackson County
Not be an employee or member of any taxing authority
Not represent property owners in VAB matters
This volunteer position requires impartiality, professionalism, and a willingness to review evidence, attend hearings, and help ensure a fair process for all petitioners. Experience in local government, property taxes, or legal matters is helpful but not required.
About the Value Adjustment Board
The Jackson County Value Adjustment Board is composed of five members:
Two County Commissioners
One School Board member
One citizen appointed by the School Board
One citizen appointed by the County Commission
The VAB meets annually, typically in the fall, to review petitions from property owners challenging decisions made by the Property Appraiser regarding assessments, exemptions, or classifications. Members attend hearings, review materials, and vote on final decisions based on recommendations from special magistrates.
Estimated Time Commitment: Approximately 5β10 hours annually, including 1β3 meeting days and light preparation work.
