Yesterday, some of our County department directors had the chance to visit the Family Dollar Distribution Center in Marianna for an inside look at its operations and role in our community.

Director of Distribution Operations Dexter Brand and HR Manager Richard Scott led a tour of the facility, and also shared insights into the day-to-day operations, workforce, and impact on our region.

Also, big shoutout to Dexter, who is a member of this year's Citizens Academy class!

It’s important for us to learn more about the businesses, organizations, and industries that help make Jackson County what it is. These local employers, whether they are large or small businesses, contribute to the fabric of our community, and we cherish opportunities to learn more about the people behind them.

We hope to continue building relationships and learn from businesses throughout Jackson County in the months ahead.

Thank you to Dexter, Richard, and the entire Family Dollar team for their hospitality and for taking the time to share their work with us.

Citizens Academy 2026 – Session 3: Public Safety

Last week, our Citizens Academy participants got a closer look at the people and departments that help keep Jackson County safe every day.

Participants met at the Emergency Operations Complex, which is the same facility that serves as the County's command center during hurricanes, severe weather, and other emergencies. This session highlighted some of the critical services our community relies on.

Participants got to hear insights from:
- Chief Jammie Jeter, who shared insight into the important work performed at the Jackson County Correctional Facility and the responsibilities that come with operating a safe and secure facility.
- Fire Chief Charlie Brunner and Emergency Management Director/Deputy Chief Keith Maddox, who discussed the many roles Jackson County Fire Rescue and Emergency Management play in protecting lives and preparing for disasters.
- Division Chief Johnny Padgett, who led a hands-on Narcan demonstration and highlighted the impact of the County's Mobile Integrated Health and Community Paramedic Program, which helps connect residents with resources and care.

Thank you to our Citizens Academy participants who allowed us to share more about these services that touch the lives of our residents every single day.

Stay tuned for next month’s session of Citizens Academy!

Congratulations to Jennifer Ham, our Personnel Specialist in HR, for being recognized as Jackson County's Employee of the Quarter!

During today’s board meeting, HR Director Maile Ontiveros shared how Jennifer played a critical role in keeping HR operations running smoothly during a period when she was handling responsibilities independently.

Our Jennifer keeps things moving, even behind the scenes. She helps our organization navigate confusing HR policies, answers a zillion questions, juggles onboarding, and absolutely steps up when needed.

We are so thankful for Jennifer’s knowledge, professionalism, patience, reliability, and willingness to help the employees of Jackson County BOCC. Her positive attitude, integrity, and dedication to serving others make her an invaluable part of this team.

This morning, Commissioners held the first public hearing on a proposed ordinance that would establish a temporary moratorium on data center development within Jackson County.

Prior to opening the public hearing for public comment, Commissioner Crutchfield made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Branch, to pursue a permanent ban on data centers rather than the proposed one-year moratorium. County Attorney Clayton Knowles then read the title of the originally advertised moratorium ordinance before the Board opened the public hearing and received public comment from residents.

Following public comment and Board discussion, the Board rescinded its original motion and made a new motion to direct the County Attorney and staff to prepare revised ordinance language that would replace the proposed moratorium with a permanent ban on data centers, associated accessory structures, and affiliated businesses. The motion passed, and also included an effective date of June 23, 2026, for the updated ordinance when adopted.

A revised draft ordinance will be published on the County website prior to the second public hearing, which is scheduled for June 23, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., when the Board will consider formal adoption of the updated ordinance banning data centers.
