We know many of you would like a tree planted in the right of way area around your home. Just a reminder that there is one easy way for all residents to "get on the list" for new street trees! Just click the following link and answer a couple questions to let us know you're interested.

Our planting area for Fall 2025 consists of the following streets: East (from Murray to Wooster), Madisonville, Miami (from Murray to the Square), Murray (from Plainville to Grove), Nolen, Plainville, Thorndike, West (from Murray to Wooster) and Wooster (from Plainville to East). We've had several requests from residents in this area over the past year, but we can still accommodate more!

If you live on one of these streets and want a street tree planted, don't delay; CLICK BY MAY 31 to be considered for this planting cycle!!

Some photos from our Arbor Day celebration at the end of April! The ME kids helped us mulch in our tree, and 2nd grade made a sign to help remind everyone to protect the tree as it grows. Ben from the service dept helped us put up a fence to give the tree some breathing room.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support us and celebrate Arbor Day! Grow, tree, grow!

ARBOR DAY 2025!

This year's Arbor Day, our very own Mariemont Elementary School will receive a gorgeous, long-lived Black Gum! The main entry doors and popular gathering spot for drop-offs and pickups will be bathed in shade in the summer and incredible fall color as this tree grows.

Join us this Friday, April 25 at 11 am for a ceremony with a short speech, proclamation by the mayor, and mulching in by ME students. We hope the students, family, and friends of Mariemont Elementary school enjoy this new addition to the community.

Shout out to our near-neighbors, Anderson Township, Ohio - Government, for preserving green spaces and forested areas in their community!

Forever green …. In a different way

Anderson has acquired over 70 Greenspace parcels and nearly 770 acres since 1990, including over 100 acres in the last two years. These parcels will remain in their natural condition, protected through the Greenspace program.

Anderson’s Greenspace properties are separate from the more than 500 acres managed by the Anderson Park District, and more than 2,200 acres protected by Great Parks of Hamilton County in our community. Nearly 17% of Anderson Township is publicly owned parkland or Greenspace!

Take a hike on one of these Greenspace areas:

- A 109 acre parcel of riparian habitat along the Little Miami River also safeguards Prehistoric Indian archaeological sites. It’s a hot spot for birds and other wildlife, near the intersection of State Route 32 and Clough Pike along the Little Miami Scenic Trail.

- The 52 acres property at the end of Wyndwatch Dr. has a path down an old driveway and protects an older woods including impressive old oak trees and wildflowers like Twin Leaf, which blooms in March and is not often seen in Anderson. It’s also a great place to see turkey, woodpeckers, and other wildlife.

- Our newest Greenspace, 10 acres at 3763 Mt. Carmel Road, protects a hilltop with beautiful mature trees in a meadow that was an old house site and a wooded hillside that is above and adjacent to a 17 acres Hillside Trust hillside woodland (pictured).

I give you Exhibit A for the reason young tree training and regular maintenance pruning is SO important for our urban trees. A branch is wrapping around one trunk, through the low split, and back up. Yikes! What may be a quirky feature on a tree in the forest becomes not only an eyesore but a source of weakness and failure in an urban tree.

Things that would have been corrected if this tree had been pruned well in its first 15 years of life:
- the low split in the main trunk would have never happened. One leader would have been selected back when the tree was small and it would have one central trunk for strength and longevity.

- low branches (less than 8 ft on the sidewalk and 15 ft on the road) would have been removed so no damage from passing trucks would have occurred to be a source of wounding and weakness in the tree.

- this large at maturity tree wouldn't have been planted underneath power lines like it is. This has forced ugly pruning and lots of suckering. This is why selecting the tree for the site is so important!

She's not a beauty but she is hanging in there and providing shade and value to our urban forest. So we pruned her up as best we could to keep her healthy and happy for as long as she can.
