The Anchorage is an Italianate Mansion built in 1859 by Douglas and Eliza Putnam. The home has had many families live in it including the family of the Knox Shipbuilders here in Marietta and the MacTaggarts, an Oil Man and then given to his sister following his death. It was turned into a Nursing Home for some time, before it sat vacant for 10 years. The Washington County Historical Society purcha

sed the home in 1996, and while smaller projects have been ongoing, we have finally accomplished one of our greater projects, a new roof for the majority of the house!!! We still have two sections that need a new roof, and we are currently trying to raise the funding for these projects, as well as restoring the interior of the home, with the end goal of turning it into a museum and community center.

I know there’s a lot going on in Marietta this evening but if you have time PLEASE stop at The Anchorage for our Christmas Open House tonight from 6-9pm.

Bring a nonperishable item, or more, for admittance to the first floor. The nonperishable items will be given to The Anchorage neighbor, Gospel Mission Food Pantry.

To tour the second floor, attic and see the Christmas lights of Marietta from the tower, it is an additional $5 donation to the Anchorage fund.

Money collected this evening helps with the restoration efforts that have been ongoing for decades but in full force since 2016!

Come see what the Anchorage Committee and volunteers have done in the house, get some cookies and punch and tour this beautiful 164 year old mansion!

Henry Fearing House Museum April 7th Annual Bell Ringing.

Due to the closing of Harmar Elementary School, the Fearing House has lost their Annual April 7th Bell Ringers. This year we are inviting local Museums, Historical Societies and Tourist Organizations to help us celebrate Marietta's 234th year by ringing our bell on April 7th, 2022, between 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm, 131 Gilman Avenue in Historic Harmar Village.

As in the past, April 7th Bell Ringing is open to the public and Bell Ringers will be given a certificate of participation. We hope you will be here to help us celebrate this historical event in American's history.

Consider joining us for our Annual Pioneer Day Dinner. Reservations must be made by March 22nd.

Due to many ongoing renovations this Fall/Winter (yay!) we will not have an Open House at The Anchorage this year. You are very welcome to join us at our Henry Fearing House Museum’s Open House!

Christmastime is the most wonderful time to visit the Henry Fearing House Museum. Each room is decked out to celebrate the Victorian Era Holidays.

A BIG "thank you" to those who will be volunteering their time and talents to make our Open House possible.

159 years ago today, Eliza Whipple Putnam, passed away. Only 3 short years after her dream home, Putnam Villa, or The Anchorage as it is known now, was completed. It has been said for many years that her spirit still resides in the Italianate mansion she worked so hard to create. Our hope is to hold a Victorian Funeral reenactment next year on the 160th anniversary of her passing. Until then, if you would like to hear the stories of Eliza and other spirits that call the Anchorage home, contact Hidden Marietta on their page or their website www.hiddenmarietta.com for more information on haunted history tours and investigations. If a history tour is what you would be more interested in, contact the Archives or see our website, www.wchshistory.org to schedule that.
