🌿🔥 Thoughtful Fuel Break Practices in Marin 🔥🌿

Wildfire mitigation is about more than reducing vegetation- it’s also about protecting the natural resources and habitat found within our landscapes.

As part of fuel break work, crews:

✔️ Remove accumulated trash from creeks and forested areas.
✔️ Provide a 3-foot vegetation buffer around wood rat nests where feasible. These nests are common and are not protected.
✔️ Retain Marin manzanita unless it has been confirmed to be another species.

These practices have been reviewed and endorsed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, helping ensure that wildfire risk reduction work considers both fire resilience and ecological stewardship.

Thoughtful, science-informed mitigation can help create safer, more resilient landscapes while caring for the ecosystems that make Marin unique.

🔥🌿 See Wildfire Mitigation in Action 🌿🔥

Want to see some of the wildfire resilience work happening across Marin?

This fall, we’ll be visiting projects that show what wildfire mitigation can look like on the ground:

🏡 October: See Ember Ready work, including vent replacements and Zone 0 improvements designed to reduce vulnerabilities around homes.

🌿 November: Visit the San Rafael–San Anselmo Fuel Reduction Zone and learn more about the work underway to reduce hazardous fuels and strengthen wildfire resilience.

These trips offer an opportunity to see projects up close, learn from the people doing the work, and better understand how different pieces of wildfire mitigation come together.

📩 Want to know when these opportunities are happening? Sign up for our updates so you don’t miss an announcement, new project, or upcoming event.

And follow us on social media for the latest news, projects, resources, and ways to get involved.

Stay connected. Stay informed. Stay prepared.

🔥🌿 Work Together, Where It Matters Most 🌿🔥

Wildfire risk doesn’t stop at a jurisdictional boundary and neither should wildfire prevention.

One of the strategic principles in Marin County’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) is to pursue continuous, coordinated, and systematic wildfire risk reduction.

What does that mean?

🤝 Coordinate across agencies and jurisdictions rather than working in isolation.
📍 Focus efforts in the same places so multiple strategies can reinforce one another.
🌿 Pair vegetation management with on-property risk reduction in neighborhoods where both can make a difference.
🏡 Integrate wildfire resilience into future development and land-use planning.
📊 Measure progress using data and consistent performance metrics.

When vegetation management, home hardening, defensible space, evacuation planning, and community preparedness are strategically aligned, their combined impact can be greater than any one project on its own.

Wildfire resilience is strongest when we work together—with a shared plan and a shared focus.

🔥🌿 Did You Know? 🌿🔥

The Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) has developed geographically-specific recommendations that highlight the highest-priority areas for wildfire risk reduction.

These recommendations are designed to be used alongside local knowledge and expertise to help communities identify effective strategies for reducing risk.

Understanding risk at the local level helps us make smarter, more targeted decisions and build a more resilient Marin together.

🔥🌿 Building a More Wildfire-Resilient Marin: The Community Wildfire Protection Plan 🌿🔥

Wildfire preparedness takes more than individual actions, it takes a coordinated plan for the entire community.

Marin’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) brings together fire agencies, local governments, community partners, land managers, and residents to identify wildfire risks and guide strategies to reduce them.

The plan helps inform work across Marin, including:
🌿 Vegetation management
🏡 Home hardening & defensible space
🚗 Evacuation and emergency preparedness
🤝 Community education and resilience
🔥 Wildfire mitigation projects

The goal is simple: reduce wildfire risk and build a safer, more fire-adapted Marin.
