On this day in history; April 10, 1886 the Council voted to purchase a hand fire pumper from Rumsey and Co. Fire Pumps in Seneca Falls, New York. The cost of the horse drawn hand pumper was $1060. The apparatus was used in the fire service until the early 1900’s when it was replaced with a gas operated fire pump. The Marine Fire Department is fortunate to still have the original hand pumper in our possession. The historic hand pumper is one of only a few left in the world known to still be in existence and operational and has been the symbol of our department for well over a century.
