Wisconsin UTV/ATV law updates begin today, June 1, 2026.

The new Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources ATV / UTV lawbook is out. The photo goes over some of the key changes. Based on some of the posts we have read online, we wanted to help clarify a few things.

Number 4, careless operation causing property damage may cost 3 times the repair cost is designed to help small townships go after riders choosing to destroy unpaved roads / parking lots.

Number 10, No towing people on trails / routes, this doesn't apply to towing machines that have people on / in them. Here is the actual code:

NR64.07(6) TOWING OF OBJECTS. While operating an all-terrain vehicle or utility terrain vehicle, no person may:

While operating on a trail or route open to the public, tow any trailer, toboggan, sled, skis, bicycle, skates or toy vehicle, bearing any person. This paragraph does not apply to the towing of a disabled all-terrain vehicle or utility terrain vehicle.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Hundreds of construction projects are planned across the state this year and we're here to help you stay safe no matter where this holiday weekend or summer travel may take you. WisDOT reminds drivers to plan ahead and be patient on Wisconsin roads and in work zones across the state.

Peak travel times are expected from 12-9 p.m. Thursday (May 21), 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday (May 22), and from 12-5 p.m. Monday, May 25. Most road construction will pause over the holiday weekend to open as many lanes as possible – but drivers may still see some activity throughout the state. Check our statewide advisory here: https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/about-wisdot/newsroom/news-rel/052026-memorialtravel.aspx

We encourage you to make 511 Wisconsin part of any travel plans, online or using the mobile app. At 511wi.gov, you can view live traffic cameras, traffic conditions, construction areas, weather radar, incidents, and more. https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/travel/511/summer-fun.aspx

Please pay attention, slow down and be distraction free in work zones – every driver makes a difference!

This week, 5th grade students from the Wausaukee and Beecher-Dunbar-Pembine Schools celebrated all of the hard work and effort they have put in during their participation in the D.A.R.E. program this school year. Deputy Nemetz presented the students with their certificate of graduation, a D.A.R.E. T-shirt, and doughnuts. Patrol Lieutenant Dave Oginski was a guest speaker at one of the graduations.

We want to thank everyone that has helped make this program possible. We could not have done this without the generous donations from throughout our community. We also appreciate and thank each of the schools for their continued commitment to the D.A.R.E. program.

Awesome work and congratulations to Deputy Nemetz and all the D.A.R.E. graduates!

National Police Week 2026 is May 10 through May 16.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.

This week is dedicated to remembering law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others, as well as to honor the men and women currently in law enforcement who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe.

Please take a moment this week to reflect and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in that service. If you are able, we would love for you to join us, along with the City of Marinette Police Department, at the Theatre On The Bay at 11:00am on Thursday, May 14, for our local Law Enforcement Memorial service.

We have some of the best here in Marinette County. As sheriff, I get to see the dedication and the sacrifices they are willing to make to keep our community safe on a daily basis, and I am proud to serve alongside of them.

— Sheriff Miller
