National Fire Prevention Week is in full swing this week and the 150th anniversary of the October 8, 1871 Peshtigo and Great Chicago Fires is rapidly approaching. Much of the midwest, including our hometown, was devastated by fire with thousands of lives being lost on that tragic night. As you take the time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and practice your home exit drills, please also take some time to reflect on those tragic events in our nation's history, to remember the lives lost, as well as those who survived to rebuild from the ashes. We should never forget!

It is with great sadness that we pass along the news of the death of retired Fire Chief, Joe Giver. Chief Giver had a remarkable 42-year career in the Wisconsin fire service, including 24 years as chief in Marinette, Dousman then Verona before retiring in 2020. Chief Giver and his wife, Darla recently relocated back to Marinette where he decided to continue serving the community as a volunteer firefighter with the Town of Peshtigo Fire Department. We will miss the opportunity to work again with our brother and we extend our sincere condolences to Darla and the entire Giver family. RIP Chief! We've got your back and know that you will be watching over ours as well.

The Town of Peshtigo Fire Department has now placed a new rescue boat into service. This watercraft is a 15 ft rigid inflatable boat with a 40 hp outboard motor and equipped with state-of-the-art navigation, lighting and rescue equipment. This entire water rescue project has been completed at no cost to our taxpayers, through generous community and business donations, as well as through several fund raising events.

Special thanks to Mercury Marine and Mercury President, Chris Drees for donating the boat and motor, and to Darren Jacobson for spearheading this project. Also, many thanks to the M&M Area Community Foundation and Zion Lutheran Church in Marinette for providing monetary grants. We would also like to thank area businesses including Springer Creek Lodge, Wind Rose North Ltd. Outfitters, Cozzy's Polaris, and Forgotten Fire Winery for sponsoring our fund raising events.

The Town of Peshtigo Fire Department extends our sincere appreciation and thanks to all residents and members of our local and extended communities who purchased raffle tickets or contributed towards this life-saving project in any way.

Town of Peshtigo Firefighters had the opportunity to conduct some fire prevention and safety training for staff members at Share Academy on Wednesday, September 8th. Some topics covered included fire escape planning, alarm systems, and fire extinguishers. Each participant then practiced what they learned by using a portable fire extinguisher to put out a small pan fire.

Construction ahead!
Two separate construction events that will impact local traffic start this week. Canadian National Railroad will be doing a complete renovation of their crossing on County T / Roosevelt Rd. This will mean T/ Roosevelt Rd will be closed starting Tuesday Sept 7th until completion on Sept 13th. The posted detour is highlighted in yellow. This construction will greatly impact traffic around the Mall shopping area, please be patient and allow yourself extra time to get to your destination, and if possible take an alternate route.

Simultaneously the median on Highway 41 at Country Meadows Ln will be closed. What this means is you will no longer be able to cross over and go left from either side, it will be right in / right out. Please avoid trying to use this crossover once the signs are up. Patrols will be added to enforce the construction zone rules.

Both closed sections are highlighted in orange, the median closure is being set up ahead of the Wisconsin DOT planned construction of permanently closing the median.

Last week, Jefferson Fire & Safety conducted pump testing on both of our engines. A series of tests is required to be completed each year, according to NFPA standards, to ensure that each engine pump operates correctly and flows water at it's rated capacities. Both engines successfully completed all tests.

Town of Peshtigo Fire Department responded to more than a dozen storm related calls over the past 24 hours. Most involved trees and/or powerlines that had broken off and fallen onto roadways. However, a lightning strike on a tree along Keller Road Monday evening caused a natural gas pipeline to rupture forcing the evacuation of several residents and closure of that road until the leak could be stopped.

Some of the hardest hit areas of the town included the Hale Road and Shore Drive areas where electrical services remained out for much of Tuesday. A portion of Shore Drive remained impassable and barricaded off for most of Tuesday due to several electrical poles being snapped off with many trees and downed lines blocking the entire roadway.

Please know that all of your area fire departments, public works and Wisconsin Public Service crews have been working tirelessly to ensure your safety, reopen roads and restore electricity. WPS and 911 dispatchers have been inundated with hundreds, if not thousands of calls, and are doing their best to keep up. Please be patient with all responders, avoid any downed electrical lines and never attempt to drive around emergency vehicles or barricades that are blocking the roads. And, as always, if you have a true emergency, call 911 and help will come.

The deadliest fire in American history was in a place many don't associate with wildfire: Northeast Wisconsin. The warming climate is amplifying the risk of more major fires outside the Western U.S.

A Huge Shout Out to Mike Biehl of MJB Industries for coming to our assistance at Wednesday night's fire on Hwy 64. After firefighters had extinguished much of the flames and the building had collapsed, a heavy fire load of burning materials remained buried inside. Mike answered our call by bringing in a backhoe and operating it himself late into the night to pull the metal siding and roofing away to expose the still burning materials. His assistance was instrumental in helping us ensure complete extinguishment and to maintain firefighter safety. Thank You Mike Biehl!

Our firefighters have spent the past several Monday evenings testing and inspecting fire hoses. Hose testing is an annual requirement, which involves taking all hose off the trucks and from storage racks in the station, then inspecting each length for damage and conducting pressure testing to make sure there are no leaks. It's a big job but helps to make sure that all hose performs as it should and is safe to work with when used at a fire.

Volunteer departments get the job done

We can’t afford to have someone who just wants to wear the t-shirt. We’re looking for someone who really wants to do this, someone who has a passion, a big heart and is willing to put the time in. The more they show up, the more they develop their skills, the more important they are to us.

Though there appears to be a shortage of volunteer firefighters, Marinette County's volunteer departments still get the job done.

Saluting Captain Ryan Kass. This guy is solid! We’re glad to have you with us.

Who doesn’t love a man in uniform! Check out Ryan Kass and leave some comments of thanks for his sacrifice. 👏🏼🇺🇸👨🏽‍🚒

Ryan has dedicated over 10 years of service as a firefighter to the town of Peshtigo! In 2016 he became a Lieutenant and in 2018 was promoted to Captain. Within the last year he expanded his role by working to become a certified instructor for the fire service program at NWTC. Ryan loves what he does and enjoys working with the wonderful group of individuals that make up the rest of the department.

Tiffany Marie Suennen, a Town of Peshtigo resident, was presented with her brand new Polaris 450 HO 4x4 ATV at Cozzy's Polaris on Wednesday afternoon. Tiffany was the lucky winner of the Town of Peshtigo Fire Department's ATV raffle which was conducted to raise funds for our water rescue boat project. Congratulations again Tiffany, and thanks to all who helped make this life saving project a reality!

Now for the rest (and best) of the story! Tiffany and her husband, Aro Suennen have decided to donate their new ATV forward. They will be working through the Marinette Wrestling Club to re-raffle off the ATV to help raise funds for Dan Queever, a local Marinette man who is battling cancer. Watch for more details on that to come soon. Meanwhile, you can check out a link to a GoFundMe page for Dan that explains more at https://gofund.me/cfb4df2e.

Came home today and found the Department sent my wife and I a basket of goodies as she is healing from her emergency gallbladder surgery yesterday. We are very appreciative of the support! She's resting up and healing very well. We are so grateful for the family we have on the Town of Peshtigo Fire Department.
Does anyone know if there are restrictions on having a campfire in Hemlock Curve park aside from the DNR burning restrictions? I looking to organize a Peshtigo Cub Scout campfire program at the site of where we are doing a conservation project with the town.
