🔥 NOTICE FOR SMYTH COUNTY RESIDENTS 🔥
The temporary total burn ban for Smyth County has officially been amended.

However, residents must still follow Virginia’s annual 4 PM Burn Law.

🌲 No open-air burning is permitted before 4:00 PM if within 300 feet of woods, brush, or dry grass. Burning is only allowed between 4:00 PM and midnight while taking proper safety precautions and attending the fire at all times.

Please continue to burn responsibly and use caution due to changing weather and dry conditions. Violation of the ban will result in a Class 3 misdemeanor and can carry a fine up to $500.

Stay safe, Smyth County! đźš’

The Burn Ban will be reevaluated during the Board of Supervisors meeting on May 28th. Any decisions or changes made will be updated promptly thereafter. We appreciate your understanding in this matter. Although recent rainfall has helped to moisten the surface soil, the ongoing 'extreme drought' has left deep soil moisture, groundwater tables, and local reservoirs substantially depleted. A consistent pattern of prolonged and soaking rainfall will be necessary to alleviate this deficit.

!!! SMYTH COUNTY CONTINUES TO BE IN A TOTAL BURN BAN !!!!

DROUGHT UPDATE ⚠️: Here’s the latest drought monitor!!! Moderate to SEVERE drought remains across the region. EXTREME drought expanded into parts of SW VA, including Smyth/Washington counties. Yes, we’ve seen some rain but we need a lot more to put a dent in the drought. -TWAC1
