The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal is now accepting applications for its FY27 Small Equipment Grant Program, which provides funding to help fire departments and emergency medical service providers purchase needed equipment.

Eligible fire departments, fire protection districts, township fire departments and not-for-profit ambulance services may apply for grants of up to $50,000. More than $6 million is available during the current application cycle.

The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability will hold hearings on the proposed closures of the DuQuoin Impact Program (Oct. 21 in DuQuoin), Greene County Work Camp (Oct. 22 in White Hall) and Clayton Work Camp (Oct. 22 in Camp Point).

CGFA has also indicated that a final hearing will be held in Springfield during the first week of the fall Veto Session.

Senate Republicans have been critical of the Pritzker Administration’s ongoing trend of closing, downsizing or relocating state facilities away from communities in downstate Illinois. They argue that the impact extends beyond the facilities themselves, affecting state employees, their families, local economies and communities that have relied on those operations for decades.

After the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) announced that it will retain 25 inpatient psychiatric beds at Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in Anna, I joined with State Senator Terri Bryant to issue the below statement:

“We appreciate that IDHS is recognizing the importance of maintaining mental health services at Choate rather than eliminating them. However, keeping just 25 of the facility's 75 psychiatric beds is still wholly inadequate and falls far short of meeting the mental health needs of Southern Illinois.

“SIU Medicine's own study recommended expanding psychiatric services at Choate, not cutting them. While this announcement is a step in the right direction, it is not enough. Southern Illinois families deserve access to mental health treatment close to home, and the dedicated employees at Choate deserve a commitment to preserving these important services.”

The Senate Republican Caucus is once again hosting its annual Veterans Day Wall of Honor from November 7th-19th to give families across Illinois an opportunity to pay tribute to loved ones who have served in the U.S. military.

A photo and written story of up to 250 words, along with the veteran’s name, military branch and conflict or era of service should be emailed [email protected] by November 6 to be included in the Veterans Day display. Submissions may also be mailed to Veterans Day Wall, 309 G Statehouse, Springfield, IL 62706. For questions, please call (217) 782-1154.

Archery deer season is officially underway in Illinois! The statewide season opened October 1 and runs in most counties through mid-January, with breaks during portions of fi***rm deer season.

Before heading into the field, hunters should review IDNR rules covering permits, hunting hours, legal equipment, clothing requirements and harvest limits.
