Boston’s Coconut Grove Fire – 79 years ago tonight.

The current fire code has been written from the analysis of events like the Coconut Grove fire. This nightclub fire claimed 492 lives in a matter of a few minutes and injured hundreds more.

The only way to provide any meaning to the loss of so many lives or extract some value from so much suffering is to identify the conditions and behaviors that led up to the disaster.

Once the lessons are learned, those lessons must be applied to prevent any similar future events. This is what fire code enforcement is…

Those in the fire service tasked with fire prevention are among the most unsung heroes anywhere. We will never get to know the fire they prevented or the identifies of the people they have saved.

May we never forget the sacrifices of others that have allowed us to live a safer life.

Many thanks to the Mattapoisett Police Department and Acting Chief Jason King for allowing us to use one of their ambulances. Your cooperation is very much appreciated. Both of our ambulances are out of service. One with a mechanical issue and one struck a deer last night while transporting to Tobey Hospital. Maintaining operational readiness is vital to the well being of our community!
Also, thank you to Wareham EMS for completing the transport of the patient last night!

His actions were heroic and represent the risk that all firefighters are prepared to take when lives are on the line. Please keep Steve and his family in your thoughts. In the last 24 hours, the Marion Fire/Ems Department has responded to a wide range of incidents from wires down, fallen trees, and other medical emergencies, to fire alarm activations and mutual aid to Wareham. This couldn’t have been done so smoothly without the tireless work of our firefighters. We also want to thank the community for avoiding high hazard areas and reporting all instances of fallen trees and down wires.
