McDowell County Rescue Squad

McDowell County Rescue Squad We are a combination paid/volunteer rescue department in the beautiful foothills of western North Carolina. McDowell EMS was not yet in existence.

We have been proudly serving the citizens of McDowell County since 1959. McDowell Rescue responds to a variety of different emergency calls. The McDowell County Rescue Squad, Station 97, was established after a large scale medical incident in the county raised awareness for the need for a department to assist with emergency situations. In June 1958, at the end of the school year, more than 200 students, faculty, and staff at the Cross Mill School became ill due to food poisoning. The shear number of patients quickly overwhelmed local resources. Surrounding counties provided assistance, including Burke County, whose newly formed Rescue Squad helped provide first aid and transported patients to the hospital. After the incident, some concerned and dedicated local citizens spoke with members of the Burke County Rescue Squad about starting a similar department in McDowell. Soon thereafter plans were underway to start McDowell County Rescue Squad. The first meeting interested individuals was held in August 1958. The original members received Standard and Advanced First Aid training. In January 1959 the state of North Carolina granted a charter to the McDowell County Rescue Squad. Today, over half a century later, Station 97 has grown from its humble beginnings. The majority of members hold at least EMT-Basic certification, while many hold certifications of EMT-Intermediate, EMT-Paramedic, or higher. Multiple members are certified Technical Rescuers. Many have extra training and certifications in specialty areas such as Diving, high angle rescue, ropes rescue, swift water rescue, agricultural rescue, confined space rescue, and trench rescue. Station 97 is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year by paid employees, and assisted by volunteers. McDowell County Rescue Squad and Ambulance Inc. is certified to the level of Heavy Rescue, and the department functions to the level of EMT-Intermediate. We are deeply indebted to those citizens who saw the need for a Rescue Squad in our county and worked diligently to establish one. As members of McDowell County Rescue Squad and Ambulance Inc., we hope our own dedication to serving the people of McDowell County, as well as those who may travel through, will continue the proud legacy of our predecessors and those who worked to bring about a positive change after an adverse situation.

Our personnel were glad to assist Burke Rescue, Burke EMS, and our fellow partner agencies during this wilderness rescue. We’re always proud to work alongside our neighboring departments when called upon.

Great teamwork by all agencies involved in safely getting this young hiker out of Linville Gorge!

Burke Rescue and Burke EMS, along with multiple departments from McDowell and Avery counties, responded to the south end of the Rock Jock Trail in Linville Gorge for a juvenile hiker experiencing an anaphylactic reaction after being stung by yellow jackets

The hiking group quickly administered an EpiPen and Benadryl before calling 911. They were also able to provide rescuers with an exact location, which helped crews quickly reach the patient.

A hasty team entered from the southern Rock Jock trailhead carrying ALS medications, oxygen, and medical equipment. Crews hiked 1.1 miles down approximately 873 feet in elevation in 25 minutes and located the patient.

ALS care was initiated while additional crews with rescue equipment made their way into the area. After treatment, the patient was feeling well enough to attempt the hike out. Wearing a harness and assisted by rescuers, the patient was able to hike back to the roadway. The patient was transported bt BCEMS to a local hospital for further treatment.

This rescue is a great reminder of the importance of being prepared while hiking in the wilderness. This group had the lifesaving medication they needed, recognized a life-threatening emergency, and called 911 quickly with an accurate location. Those decisions made a real difference.

September is also a time when yellow jackets can be particularly active. Their colonies have grown throughout the summer, and they become more aggressive as they search for food going into fall.

If you have a known allergy to insect stings, carry your EpiPen and know how to use it. You never know when it may save your life or someone else's.

Thank you to everyone who worked together to get this patient safely out of the gorge.

Today marks 25 years since the attacks of September 11, 2001.

We remember the 2,977 lives lost, including 441 first responders who answered the call that day. It remains the greatest loss of emergency responders on a single day in American history.

Today, we honor all those who lost their lives, their loved ones, the first responders who served with extraordinary courage, and all those across our country whose lives were forever changed by the events of that day.

Twenty-five years later, we will never forget. 🇺🇸
