Sad to say Joker was laid to rest yesterday. He was surrounded by those of loved him; family, friends, co-workers, trainers, and fellow K-9’s. I am extremely honored to have been able to be this big guys handler, was a one of a kind.
Joker. Big man.
Over the weekend, retired K9 Joker’s health rapidly deteriorated. After consulting with our unit’s vet, the hard decision that no handler wants to make, had to be made.
Joker served alongside his handler, Lt. Wheeler, with the Marion Police Department for 6 years, retiring in 2023. He was deployed over 1,000 times with the ultimate goal to protect our city and its officers. To know Joker was to know that he was a hard worker, a “push button dog” as some would say. Malinois are typically known for being full of energy and on “go mode” 24/7. Joker was the exception. He was calm, methodical and dedicated to the task. He was large for his breed, but his heart was even larger. He wasn’t afraid to take a bite out of crime, but don’t you dare stop giving him head scratches.
Joker was loved within our agency, and we are going to miss him. Rest easy buddy, we have it from here. Thank you for your service.
