Today we announced the creation of the Smyth County Behavioral Health Docket, a new court program approved by the Supreme Court of Virginia that will address criminal behavior connected to serious mental illness.

"The Behavioral Health Docket is not a 'get out of jail free card,'" said Commonwealth's Attorney Blevins. "Participants will be held to strict standards of supervision, treatment compliance, and accountability. What this program recognizes, however, is that when non-violent criminal behavior is driven by untreated mental illness, simply cycling individuals through jail without addressing underlying mental health issues does little to protect the public."

"This program allows us to hold non-violent offenders accountable while addressing the root causes of crime; reducing repeat offenses, strengthening families, and saving taxpayer dollars."

The new Behavioral Health Docket is accepting applications now.
