We’re heartbroken to hear of the passing of Dolly Parton. 📚

Through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, thousands of children in Marion have received the gift of a free book each month from birth to age five. This program fills a known gap in childhood literacy by providing reading materials to a child during the most critical years of language and cognitive development.

We’re grateful for the love of reading Dolly shared with generations of children over the years. Her legacy will live on through the work of Imagination Library and in young readers across the world. 💛

ALA is heartbroken at the passing of country music legend, cultural icon, and champion of literacy Dolly Parton.

Dolly’s award-winning Imagination Library initiative, inspired by her father’s inability to read or write, has put hundreds of millions of free books into the hands of children across America and was considered by her to be one of her greatest achievements.

“We’re giving books to kids who wouldn’t have a chance to get them otherwise,” she told American Libraries in a 2018 interview. “A lot of people think this is just for poor children—it’s for all children. It’s important to get books into the hands of any child that we can.”

ALA was proud to confer Dolly with an honorary lifetime membership, the Association’s highest honor, in 2023 for her lasting impact on librarianship, libraries, and the communities they serve.

Dolly was also part of ALA’s Celebrity READ campaign, in which she holds a copy of 'The Little Engine That Could.'

“I’ve always related to that book because I’m the little engine that did!” she said.

Will we see you at Therapy Dog Storytime this month? 🐶 Join us on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Youth Programming Room! Our trained therapy dog friends will visit, and kids can read to the dogs.

Did you know: the library opens one hour late on the third Friday of the month? 💡

During this time, staff gather as a team for training and professional development sessions so we can provide the best possible service to our patrons.

With that being said, the library will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 21. The bookmobile will start its morning routes at the Marion Pool at 10:45 a.m. We'll see you then!
