This weather pattern seems to be stuck on repeat. Please be aware of the risk of heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding today.

Heavy rain producing storms will continue to expand through 10 AM, particularly south of U.S. Highway 20. The main focus will be on periods of very heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding, especially for areas that see repeated rounds of storms. Gusty winds are also possible for areas along and south of U.S. Highway 34.

Did you know that 6th Avenue used to be the major street heading into Cedar Rapids and that a street/trolley car traveled that route from 1892-1937?

This image was on a postcard that shows today's Marion Boulevard and 1st Avenue in Cedar Rapids, looking toward Marion - likely near the curve north of the Town and Country Shopping Center.

Here's an excerpt from the "Marion, The City Beautiful" booklet dated 1913-1915:

A modern electric trolley line is the Cedar Rapids & Marion City Railway. Its business consists of interurban passenger and express traffic between the twin cities. Operating out of its own station on Sixth avenue between Eleventh and Twelfth streets, cars leave this station every twenty minutes during the day. The service on this road is maintained at all times at the highest standard of efficiency. This line was among the first in the United States to install electric motive power. Every appliance contributing toward the safety and comfort of passengers and patrons has been provided and great care is taken to give the best possible service.

Six years ago today, Aug. 10, 2020, winds of more than 140 miles per hour swept through the region and caused unbelievable devastation. A great majority of structures in our community sustained some amount of damage and at least 225 were destroyed. Nearly 41.5% of trees on public property and many more on private property were lost.

Crews collected approximately 1.2 million cubic yards of tree debris and 10,000 cubic yards of construction and demolition debris, and the City’s recovery efforts totaled more than $33 million. Volunteers from Marion and across the nation generously offered their time and resources to help thousands of families in need.

Since then, much of the damage has been repaired and nearly 10,500 trees have been planted in public spaces and thousands more have been planted on private property. Marion’s response was rooted in an exemplary community spirit, cooperation and concern for the well-being of people.

This video, produced in the months after the derecho, captures the power of commUNITY.

A few additional updates...

The Yard Waste Drop-off site at 195 35th Street is open until 4:15 p.m. today if you have twigs/branches you want to dispose of.

If you have larger amounts of debris and no way to haul it, please contact the Public Works Department on Monday by calling 319-377-6367.

Our Parks & Rec team is out assessing trails and parks and cleaning up debris.

We are aware that several portable restrooms were blown over during the storm. We’re working with our vendor to get those cleaned and back in service as quickly as possible.

And as always, if you see a hazard, or someone is in danger - call 9-1-1. You can also report less urgent matters by calling the Marion Police Department's non-emergency line at 319-377-1511.

We hope you weathered this evening’s storm with minimal impacts. Crews are responding to several power outages in the area caused by the storm.

If you see downed power lines, particularly those that are arching or starting a fire, STAY AWAY, do not touch and call 9-1-1.

Our electricity partners are mobilizing to address the outages.

Alliant Energy customers: Report a downed power line, natural gas leak, carbon monoxide alarm or other emergency by calling 1-800-ALLIANT (800-255-4268) or www.alliantenergy.com/customer-service/outage-center
