Marion Fire-EMS Marion Fire-EMS was established on March 1, 2015 through the merger of the Marion Fire Department (est. 1888) and the Marion Life Saving Crew (est 1948).

The Marion Fire-EMS Department was established on March 1, 2015 through a merger of the Marion Volunteer Fire Department, which was established in 1888) and the Marion Life Saving Crew, which was established in 1948. Both organizations bring a long and proud history to the new Department and we look forward to serving the residents of our coverage area for many years to come! Marion Fire-EMS would like to congratulate and thank two long-serving members as they begin their well-deserved retirement: FF-EMT Dennis Wyatt and FF-EMT-I April Keesling.

​FF-EMT Dennis Wyatt retires after 20 years of service to the Marion community.

​FF-EMT-I April Keesling retires after 18 years of dedicated service.

​Together, Dennis and April have served Marion for nearly 38 years, responding to thousands of calls and keeping our community safe. We are deeply grateful for their professionalism, hard work, and decades of commitment to the department.
​Please join us in wishing Dennis and April the very best in their retirement!

Today, Marion Fire/EMS celebrated winning a Dominion Energy Grant for $3,000. Chief Richard Keesling said the funds will be used to purchase new firefighting equipment for the department.

Marion Announces Program for 25th Annual Marion “Patriot’s Day” Program and Commemoration on 9-11 – “In Honor and In Remembrance”

(Marion, VA) The Town of Marion is organizing Marion’s 25th annual tribute to area veterans, servicemen and servicewomen, emergency services personnel, law enforcement personnel, and their families for a special day of community activities on Friday, September 11 beginning at 12 noon at the Marion Fire Hall, located at 231 West Main Street, in the heart of historic downtown Marion, Virginia.

Local law enforcement, emergency services, and fire agencies are invited to bring apparatus and other vehicles to display along Main Street.

Marion VFW Post 4667 will present the Colors. Members and families of all area law enforcement, life saving crews, rescue squads, fire departments, veterans, and active military will be honored as part of the program. American Legion Post #18 Commander Mark Chaney will be guest speaker for the event.

🚌 SCHOOL BUS SAFETY REMINDER 🏫

With Smyth County Public Schools back in session for the 2026–2027 school year, the Marion Police Department wants to remind everyone of Virginia’s laws regarding stopped school buses.

Virginia Code § 46.2-859 – Passing a Stopped School Bus

🛑 When a school bus is stopped to load or unload passengers:

• Two-Lane Roadway: Vehicles traveling in both directions MUST STOP.

• Multi-Lane Roadway: Vehicles traveling in both directions MUST STOP when the roadway is not divided by a physical barrier or qualifying separation.

• Divided Highway: When the opposing roadways are separated by a physical barrier or an unpaved area, vehicles approaching from behind the bus MUST STOP. Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction may proceed with caution.

🔴 Always stop when a school bus is stopped with its red warning lights activated and stop sign extended.

🚸 Remain stopped until the children or other passengers are clear of the roadway and the school bus begins moving again.

⚠️ Do not pass a stopped school bus simply because you don't see children in the roadway. Virginia law requires motorists to stop when approaching a school bus that is stopped for the purpose of loading or unloading passengers.

⚖️ Passing a stopped school bus in violation of Virginia Code § 46.2-859 is classified as reckless driving, a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by:
• Up to 1 Year in Jail
• A Fine of up to $2,500
• 6 DMV Demerit Points
