Emergencies can happen anytime, and being prepared can make a big difference when every minute counts. Take some time this month to make sure you and your family are ready for severe weather, power outages, fires, flooding, and other unexpected emergencies.

A few simple ways to prepare include:

- Keep several days of food, water, medications, and essential supplies on hand.
- Have flashlights, batteries, phone chargers or power banks, and a battery-powered weather radio available.
- Create a family emergency plan, including where to meet and how to communicate if you become separated.
- Know multiple evacuation routes from your home and community.
- Keep important documents, emergency contacts, and insurance information somewhere safe and accessible.
- Sign up for local emergency alerts and pay attention to watches and warnings.
- Donโ€™t forget supplies and plans for pets, children, older adults, or anyone with additional medical or accessibility needs.

Preparedness doesnโ€™t have to happen all at once. Taking a few small steps now can help you respond with confidence when an emergency occurs.

Being prepared starts with knowing what emergencies could affect your community. Severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, extreme heat, winter weather, and power outages can all happen with little warning.

- Learn which hazards are common in your area
- Sign up for local emergency alerts
- Know where to go and what to do before an emergency happens
- Talk with your family about your plan

Knowing your risks today can help you make safer decisions tomorrow.

You never know when a power outage, severe storm, or other emergency might happen, so itโ€™s always a good idea to have a few essentials ready ahead of time.

A basic emergency supply kit should include:
- Water
- Nonperishable food
- Flashlight + batteries
- First aid kit
- Medications
- Phone charger or power bank
- Important documents
- Hygiene items
- Pet supplies if needed

Preparedness doesnโ€™t have to be overwhelming โ€” even putting together a few items at a time can make a big difference. Start small and build your kit as you can!

With high temperatures expected, remember to take precautions and stay safe. Drink plenty of water, limit strenuous outdoor activity, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.

Please check on elderly family members, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat. Stay cool and stay safe!

Even after the weather clears, hazards can remain. If youโ€™re checking your home or property:

- Watch for structural damage, broken glass, slippery floors, and damaged wiring.
- Stay away from downed power lines and report them to local officials.
- If you smell gas, leave the area and do not enter the building.
- Avoid floodwater and potentially contaminated water.
- Be careful around debrisโ€”animals and snakes may be hiding underneath.
- Keep a battery-powered radio nearby and follow updates from local authorities.

When in doubt, donโ€™t take the risk. Have a professional check the property before going inside.

Stay alert, stay safe, and look out for your neighbors!
