Vehicle Recovered from Crab Orchard Lake

Carterville, Illinois – On Saturday, August 1, 2026, at approximately 2:48 p.m., Deputies with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of the boat ramp at Crab Orchard Lake near Foreville Road after a report of a submerged vehicle in the water.

Upon arrival, deputies located the submerged passenger vehicle. Members of the responding dive and rescue teams recovered the vehicle and its occupant from the lake. Emergency medical personnel determined the individual was deceased at the scene.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Marion Fire Department, Lake of Egypt Fire Department, Carterville Fire Department, Carbondale Fire Department, West Frankfort Fire Department, Benton Fire Department, Crainville Police Department, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources – Office of Law Enforcement, and the Williamson County Coroner’s Office.

This incident remains an active and ongoing investigation. No additional information is being released at this time.

The Lake Egypt Fire District would like to congratulate one of our part-time members, Firefighter/EMT Chad Beaumont on his retirement from his full-time job at the Metropolis Fire Department. Don’t worry, we’ll still be seeing Beau around as he still plans on working part-time for us. Now he just has more time to devote to his side business, Beau Holler Outdoors.

OSFM’s Robert Beal stopped by the Metropolis Fire Department last week to honor and congratulate Chad Beaumont on 25 years of dedicated service.

Thank you, Chad, for all you have done for the department and the Metropolis community. Congratulations on a well-deserved retirement, and best wishes in this next chapter! 👏🚒
