THREE ARRESTED FOLLOWING DRIVE-BY SHOOTING
August 19, 2026
MARION, S.C. - On August 18, 2026, officers with the Marion Police Department responded to the 200 block of Martin Luther King Drive in reference to a reported drive-by shooting that had just occurred.
Upon arrival, officers located an 18-year-old male who had sustained a gunshot graze wound. The victim was transported to MUSC Health Marion Medical Center for treatment and has since been released.
During the investigation, officers obtained video footage of the incident from a nearby Ring security camera. Using information developed during the investigation, officers located the suspected vehicle a short distance away at a convenience store.
Tyrese Malik Suggs, 27; Jquan Killings, 19; and a 17-year-old juvenile were detained. Following further investigation, all three were arrested in connection with the shooting.

Due to the defendant's age, identifying information concerning the juvenile is not being released.
The investigation remains ongoing.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The City of Marion, Municipal Government has opened a cooling shelter at Shannon Wilkerson Gym (229 Bobby Gerald Parkway) beginning today and will be open until Friday (8/21/2026). Hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Thank you to all who came out for our Back to School Bash on July 25. Although the weather did not cooperate, we still had a great time and a large turnout. A big thank you to Anderson Brothers Bank, Horry Telephone Cooperative (HTC), Robert E. Lee, Marion County Library System and Precise Care Transport (Nadine Foxworth). We wouldn't have been able to provide school supplies to the youth without your support. Due to the threat of thunderstorms in the area our Family & Friends Fun Day and Back to School Bash will be moving to Shannon Wilkerson Gym on Bobby Gerald Parkway.  The event will still begin at 11:00 a.m.

Our Family & Friends Family Fun Day and Back to School Bash is still planned for tomorrow from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m at Grice's Recreation Center. If rain prevents us from having it outside, we will move to Shannon Wilkerson Gym on Bobby Gerald Blvd. If we have to change venues I will post in on Facebook and on our app tomorrow morning no later than 8:00 a.m.

Don't forget, this weekend is the weekend to come out for fellowship and fun and pick up school supplies as well as many other giveaways. We have food vendors, arts & crafts, bouncy houses, games for the kids, and much more. The swimming pool will also be open at no charge to the public. If anyone would like to still participate feel free to contact the Marion Police Department to get more information. There will be no fees for setting up. Please come out and show what your business or organization has to offer the community. We look for to everyone coming out and having a fun-filled day.

City of Marion Municipal Code 7-2014 states that fireworks may only be used, fired, shot or discharged on July 3 and July 4 from 5:00 PM until 11:00 PM. Please be mindful of neighbors, pets, veterans and those that may suffer from PTSD as well as those that still have to work. The fine amount for any violation of this Municipal Code is $1087.50.

The ACO I program covers critical, day-to-day concepts spanning animal welfare, law enforcement, and public safety.
The training includes Animal Handling & Safety - Techniques for safely interacting with, perceiving, and understanding dog and cat behavior, Basic Investigations - Core protocols for investigating animal cruelty and neglect, Understanding "The Link"- Recognizing the connections between animal abuse and other crimes like domestic violence or child abuse, as well as Civil Liability & Ethics - Understanding the legal boundaries, laws, and professional ethics required for the job, Disease & Shelter Operations - Best practices for disease recognition, control, and maintaining a clean facility, and Public Relations - How to communicate with the public and manage community relations.

On June 23, 2026, our officers, along with officers from the Marion Fire Rescue and the Marion County Sheriff's Office-South Carolina, received Autism Law & Emergency Response Training (A.L.E.R.T.) from The Arc of South Carolina to better understand, communicate with, and respond to autistic individuals during emergency situations.

The A.L.E.R.T. Training program provided law enforcement officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively interact with individuals on the autism spectrum. Training focused on recognizing common characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), understanding sensory sensitivities, identifying communication challenges, and utilizing appropriate de-escalation techniques during law enforcement encounters.

Officers learned strategies for responding to individuals experiencing sensory overload, wandering incidents, and crisis situations while promoting safety, dignity, and understanding. The training emphasized community-oriented policing, improved communication, and building positive relationships between law enforcement and individuals with autism, their families, and caregivers.

Through increased awareness and practical response techniques, officers are now better equipped to provide professional, compassionate, and effective service to all members of the community.
