Marion City Planning Commission: Volunteers needed to fill open positions.

Members of the City Planning Commission serve voluntarily, by Mayoral appointment and approval of the City Council.

There are three available commissioner positions as of September 1, 2026. Interested parties should read the following excerpt from the Bylaws of the City Planning Commission and reach out to City Hall for more information by calling 620-382-3425 or 620-382-3703

* The Commission consists of seven members, each serving a rotation of three-year terms.
* Members shall be a resident of the City of Marion, Kansas, except two such members shall reside outside of the City, but within three miles of the corporate limits of the City.
* Members are appointed by the Mayor, by and with the consent of the City Council at their first regular meeting in January of each year and take office at the next regular meeting of the Commission.
* Vacancies are filled by appointment for the unexpired term.
* Any member that absences himself or herself from more than three regular meetings per calendar year for reasons not considered justifiable by the Commission.
* Regular meetings of the Commission are scheduled to take place on the last Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m.
* The Commission is vested with the responsibilities for preparation, adoption, maintenance, and review of the official Comprehensive Plan for the City, Subdivision Regulations, Zoning Regulations, annual budget for the Commission, hold public hearings, and make recommendations to the City Council.

Job Opening - Join a team of dedicated partners, providing essential services for the Marion community.

Lineman - Electric Department

Under the supervision of the Electric Department Supervisor, the Lineman is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair and/or construction of the City’s overhead and underground electrical distribution system, throughout the distribution system, to each transformer, to the customer’s point of hookup. This position is also responsible for the maintenance of the City’s secondary system, including buildings, water wells, sewer pumps, and other electrical needs. This employee should possess a strong technical and mechanical aptitude, and excellent communication and public relation skills.

Compensation determined by education, licensing and experience.

Benefits Include: Health Insurance, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Paid Time Off and other options.

Evenings of August 27 & 28: Atmos Energy and Southern Cross will be conducting a safety survey of their natural gas services for any leaks. A mobile detection unit in a vehicle clearly marked with flashing lights and the Southern Cross logos will be slowly driving through the streets and alleys of Marion. The Marion Kansas Fire Dept and the City of Marion are testing fire hydrants as a part of the ISO Certification of the Fire Dept. and the City Building Code Enforcement. Testing began last night, Wednesday, August 19. The next hydrant tests are scheduled for Sunday, August 23 at these locations:

E. Main St & Eisenhower St.
S. Freeborn & E Maple
Flint Rock east of N. Industrial (behind ACE Hardware)

Businesses and residents in the vicinity of the hydrant testing may experience discolored water due to the testing/flushing of the hydrants/water lines. Simply running the cold water for a few minutes should clear up the water. This process is similar to the ongoing hydrant flushing that the Marion Water Treatment plant does, on an ongoing basis, to keep non-circulating water lines from accumulating various minerals and other sedimentary substances. It is a valuable procedure for maintaining high water quality throughout the City.

About every five years, the Insurance Services Office (ISO) evaluates a municipality’s fire protection capabilities and the building code enforcement efforts and assigns a rating. The rating is used by insurance companies to set local insurance rates for commercial and residential coverages.
