The Smyth County Sheriff’s Office is a full service law enforcement agency responsible for covering approximately 452 square miles. It serves the county’s population of approximately 33,081. The Sheriff's Office currently employees 83 employees. These officers are assigned to Field, Investigations, Court Security/Transport, Civil Process Service, Warrant Service, Crime Prevention, Communications and Administrative.

As we head into the Labor Day holiday weekend, the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting targeted traffic enforcement across the county. Our goal is simple: to keep our roads safe for everyone traveling during the holiday.
Throughout the weekend, Deputies will be focusing on violations that contribute to serious crashes — including speeding, distracted driving, safety restraints, and impaired driving. To round out this effort, we will be conducting Sobriety Checkpoints on September 7th at select locations around Smyth County.

These checkpoints are part of our ongoing commitment to reducing impaired driving and preventing injuries and fatalities on our roadways. We encourage all drivers to plan ahead, use a designated driver, and make smart choices behind the wheel.

ARREST MADE IN LARCENY INVESTIGATION.

Over the past couple of weeks the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports from area businesses of the theft of parts from their outdoor A/C units. The reports ranged from Atkins to Chilhowie, with the following victims identified thus far, Atkins First Church of God, Mount Rogers IDC, Freedom Tabernacle, Evergreen Soil and Water, Chilhowie Pentecostal Church, and Casey’s Diner.

On 8/22/26, after conducting further investigation into one of the reports, Deputies identified a suspect, Matthew Allen Shupe, age 25, of Glade Spring Va. Upon further investigation, Deputies located several stolen items in the car Shupe was driving and he confessed to the aforementioned thefts. Losses are estimated to be over $55,000.

Matthew Allen Shupe was charged with six counts of violating Va. Code section 18.2-95, Grand Larceny, a felony, and is currently held without bond at the Abingdon Regional Jail pending an arraignment in the Smyth County General District Court.

The Smyth County Sheriff’s Office urges everyone to please report criminal activity to us as soon as possible to potentially prevent further incidents.

NEW SMYTH COUNTY COURTHOUSE POLICY CONCERNING ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Please see the photos to read the new Electronic Devices Policy for the Smyth County Courthouse. The policy has been adopted by the 28th Judicial Circuit and placed in effect by Cheif Judge Deanis L. Simmons. The Smyth County Sheriff’s Office will adhere to this policy without exception.
