COMMUNITY CALL FOR SPEAKERS: 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11

As we prepare to commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we are reaching out to our community in search of individuals who may be willing to share a personal connection to the events of that day.

We would especially like to hear from:

• Firefighters, law enforcement officers, first responders, or members of the military
• Individuals who were in New York City, Washington, D.C., or Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001
• Those who participated in rescue, recovery, response, or support efforts
• Anyone who lost or had a family member, friend, or loved one directly affected by the attacks
• Others with a meaningful personal connection to September 11 and its aftermath

We are seeking one or more individuals who would be comfortable sharing their story as part of our community’s 25th anniversary remembrance.

This is an opportunity to honor those we lost, recognize those who answered the call to serve, and help ensure that the stories and lessons of September 11 continue to be passed on to future generations.

SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER

Today, the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office received a report of suspicious circumstances involving a man in a white vehicle who reportedly offered a ride to a student waiting at a bus stop.

With limited information available, including the vehicle type and direction of travel. We are unsure of the context or the intentions of the contact, however, deputies canvassed the surrounding area and contacted nearby residents to determine whether security cameras, Ring cameras, or other video systems may have captured anything that could assist with the investigation.

As students return to school, we want to remind parents, guardians, and students about the importance of staying alert and making safe choices while walking to and from school or waiting at a bus stop.

Students should never accept a ride from someone they do not know, approach an unfamiliar vehicle, or engage with anyone who makes them feel uncomfortable. If someone approaches you, offers you a ride, or behaves suspiciously, move to a safe location and immediately tell a trusted adult, school staff member, or law enforcement.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to talk with their children about these situations and remind them that they should never be afraid to speak up or report something that doesn't feel right.
With school back in session, the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office has increased patrols around schools and school zones throughout the county.

Stay alert. Stay safe. If you see something suspicious, report it.

Road closure has been extended down Highway 140 to Hornitos road.

At this time, there is no estimated time of reopening.

Highway 140 is closed west of Mount bullion cutoff to Elizabeth Lane due to a vehicle accident.

Vehicles traveling west on highway 140 towards Merced will need to use the Yaqui Gulch to old highway to 140, or 49 N. to old toll to Hornitos Road.

Vehicles traveling east towards Mariposa will need to take old highway to Yaqui Gulch to 140, or Hornitos Road to old toll to Highway 49 N.

At this time, there is no estimated time of reopening.

🚧 Temporary Road Closure – 10th Street at Old Highway 🚧

Why is 10th Street temporarily closed?

We’ve received a lot of questions about the temporary closure of 10th Street, and we want to explain why this decision was made.

The Sheriff’s Office has facilities on both sides of 10th Street, which means our staff, deputies, community members, and visitors are constantly crossing back and forth throughout the day. We also serve as the location for child custody exchanges, bringing families and children to this area on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, we’ve experienced multiple close calls over the years. Vehicles often travel through this area at unsafe speeds, and we’ve even had patrol vehicles struck by passing traffic. The intersection of 10th Street and Old Highway has no stop sign, the roadway is narrow, and the steep hill creates limited visibility for both drivers and pedestrians. Those factors combined create a dangerous situation.

Our goal is simple: to get ahead of a tragedy before one happens.

This temporary closure is not intended to be a permanent solution. We recognize that a long-term answer will require additional planning and collaboration. However, doing nothing while we wait for a permanent fix is not an option.

The safety of our employees, community members, children participating in custody exchanges, jurors, witnesses, victims, and everyone who visits our facilities must come first.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work toward a safer solution for everyone. Using another alternate route may add a few extra seconds to your drive, but if it helps prevent even one crash, those few seconds are well worth it.

Beginning Thursday, July 23, 2026, 10th Street at Old Highway will be closed until further notice.

This temporary closure is being put in place to improve safety around the Sheriff’s Office. We’ve received multiple reports of vehicles traveling at excessive speeds in this area, creating a dangerous situation for staff and pedestrians. There have been several close calls, and this closure is intended to help prevent someone from being seriously injured.

The closure is authorized under California Streets & Highways Code 942.5 and is being implemented to protect the public.

Homes located on 10th street can be accessed by using Jones Street.

Today we celebrate the birth of our nation. Whether you're spending the day with family, firing up the barbecue, heading to the lake, or enjoying our very own Mariposa County America 250 celebration, we hope you have a safe and memorable Independence Day.

As you celebrate, please remember that all fireworks are illegal in Mariposa County. With our dry conditions, even a single spark can have devastating consequences.

From all of us at the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office, thank you for helping keep our community safe.

For the past three years, the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Foundation has quietly stepped in to help keep one important Animal Control program alive.

What started as a temporary solution with a $2,000 commitment has grown into more than $15,000 in veterinary care, covering the cost of spay and neuter surgeries for adoptable dogs and cats. By removing that financial burden, we’ve helped make countless animals more adoptable and given them a better chance at finding their forever homes.

Recently, we reached a difficult crossroads. The program had exhausted every dollar that had been set aside, and the Foundation covered the remaining veterinary bills with our own funds. We were preparing to make the heartbreaking decision to end the program.

Then something incredible happened.

After sharing the need with county partners and members of our community, a generous donation came in that allows us to continue this effort for a little while longer. We are incredibly grateful. But the reality is that this funding will only carry the program for a few more months.

This program was never intended to be a permanent solution. It was created to bridge a gap while a long-term answer is identified. That need still exists today.

There is no doubt this effort has helped save many—if not hundreds—of animals by giving them the opportunity to find loving homes instead of facing uncertain outcomes. It is also just one example of how the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Foundation supports the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office while strengthening our community.
