Markesan Emergency Management Emergency Lighting, Traffic Control, Trained Weather Spotters, Set up Helicopter Landing zones

12/12/2025

We’re very sad to share that our friend and longtime teammate, Jim Boetler, has passed away.

Jim has been part of Emergency Management here for over 40 years, and anyone who worked with him knows how dedicated he was. He showed up, worked hard, and truly cared about this town and the people in it. He was the kind of person you could always rely on, and we were lucky to have him on our team for so long.

His loss is felt by all of us. Our thoughts are with his wife Carrie, his mom Vila, and hope they know how much he meant to the people he worked with.

Thank you, Jim, for everything you did for this community, we’ll miss you.

Markesan Emergency Management would like to take a quick moment to give everyone a little piece of mind and reassurance. With the outbreak of tornadoes hitting 6 states the other day, just South of us. We want to remind you we don't take sounding the tornado siren alarms lightly. In an effort to prevent crying wolf, we typically wait for information as to a tornado being on the ground, or in the area before activation. Our tornado sirens are tested regularly, and have in the past been used to save many lives. At the threat of dangerous weather we also deploy trained weather spotters in the area, and utilize a network of weather spotters throughout the county. We often try to offer the most up-to-date and expedited inclement weather warnings when possible. This post would typically be better suited in the spring, however there is a threat of severe weather coming in the next few days. We're expecting high winds, be sure holiday decorations are secure as possible, and be aware falling tree limbs may present potential hazards. Stay safe, and informed.

Thank you

While we appreciate the level of concern so many community members express while we're on scene assisting in a variety of incidents. Please follow these guidelines in the future to help protect us, as we're only out to help others.

When you see us out, approach slowly. Speed kills.

Whenever possible avoid us all together, detour early if feasible. Do not pull up and stop, ask if everything is okay, or explain how you're trying to get to Ripon or Fond du Lac or where have you. Please just avoid the scene, avoid us, and figure out a new way.

Do not drive around us, or over our barricades. This is imperative! This happened yesterday, and happens often. We do not shut down roads or highways for fun. Often times we set landing zones for helicopters right on the road. Please reroute, or citations can, and will result.

Please pull over and slow or stop when you see us responding to a call.

Yesterday we spent over two hours in blizzard like conditions including periods of white out visibility, on two different scenes. We had vehicles do all of the above mentioned, including a truck slide past us on glare ice. We don't want an accident scene made worse, please slow down, and follow instructions.
