TRAFFIC ADVISORY & ROAD CLOSURE UPDATE: LA-454 WIGGINS BAYOU BRIDGE

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has issued a progress update regarding the ongoing bridge replacement project on Louisiana Highway 454 over Wiggins Bayou in Avoyelles Parish.
All lanes on LA-454 in both directions at the Wiggins Bayou Bridge remain closed to all through traffic.

Project Overview & Status
Scope of Work: The $11 million, 0.178-mile project includes the complete removal of the old concrete girder bridge, installation of a modern precast pre-stressed girder bridge, construction of permanent sheet pile walls, and associated roadway improvements.
Current Progress: Since construction began, crews have demolished and removed the previous bridge structure, carried out major earthwork, and resolved the severe erosion and scour conditions that affected the original crossing. Active operations currently underway include pile driving and the placement of caps and girders.
Estimated Completion: Early 2027 (weather permitting).

Detour Routes
Motorists traveling through the area must continue utilizing designated state detours:
Eastbound Traffic: Detour south on LA-107 to LA-454 West.
Westbound Traffic: Detour north on LA-107 to LA-454 East.

Please remain mindful of heavy equipment and construction personnel working in and around the project boundaries.

EMERGENCY ROAD CLOSURE: LA 3041 AT INTERSECTION OF LA 115 (AVOYELLES PARISH)

The Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office is sharing an official advisory from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) regarding an upcoming emergency road closure.

Closure Details:
Location: LA 3041 at the intersection of LA 115
Date & Time: Friday, August 28th, 2026, starting at 8:00 AM
Estimated Duration: Expected to remain closed for the duration of the day
Purpose: Replacement of a failing cross drain at the intersection
Detour: DOTD has announced that there is no designated detour route for this closure. Motorists should plan alternate travel routes and expect minor delays.

Sheriff David L. Dauzat and the deputies of the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office urge all drivers to exercise caution near work zones. Please reduce your speed, stay alert for DOTD maintenance crews and heavy machinery, and allow extra time to reach your destination safely.

Sheriff David L. Dauzat and the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff's Office are sharing the following official disaster recovery announcement issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regarding Rental Assistance for local residents:

➡️FEMA Announcement: Rental Assistance Available
FEMA has announced that Rental Assistance is available to eligible Louisiana renters, homeowners, and students who are unable to live in their primary residences due to damage caused by Tropical Storm Arthur from June 17–24.

➡️What the Grant Provides: FEMA Rental Assistance is a temporary grant to help pay for temporary housing—such as a house, apartment, recreational vehicle, or other option—while your permanent home is being repaired, rebuilt, or while you search for a new place to live.

➡️Eligible Parishes: Avoyelles, Lafourche, Pointe Coupee, St. Landry, St. Tammany, and Terrebonne.

➡️FEMA Guidelines: Covered vs. Non-Covered Expenses
FEMA emphasizes that grant funds must be spent strictly on approved rental expenses and all receipts must be retained.

➡️Covered Costs: Temporary housing rent, security deposits, and essential utility costs (gas, electric, water).
➡️Costs NOT Covered: Internet and cable television services , replacement of personal property (such as lost food or clothing) , home repairs, or transportation and fuel costs.

➡️Assistance Duration & Insurance Documentation
Assistance Duration: Initial grants are determined on a case-by-case basis and cover one to two months. Continued Temporary Housing Assistance may be granted for three-month periods upon submitting receipts and documentation proving prior funds were used properly.

➡️If You Have Insurance: If your policy includes Additional Living Expenses (ALE) or temporary housing benefits, you must provide FEMA with your insurance claim settlement, proof of exhaustion, or denial documentation to determine grant eligibility.

ROAD AND LANE STATUS: LA 107 INFRASTRUCTURE REPAIR PROJECT IN MARKSVILLE

MARKSVILLE, LA — August 5th, 2026 — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has announced a $5.3 million highway improvement project along a major stretch of LA 107 in Avoyelles Parish.

Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 10th, 2026, covering over seven miles of highway from Mark Street in Marksville to the Red River bridge. The scope of work includes full-depth base repairs, old asphalt milling, new asphalt repaving, fresh roadway striping, and updated signage. Construction is expected to wrap up in late Fall 2026, depending on weather and site conditions.

PROJECT BREAKDOWN:
Location: LA 107 (From Mark Street in Marksville to the Red River bridge)
Start Date: Monday, August 10th, 2026
Target Completion: Late Fall 2026
Traffic Impact: Intermittent lane closures throughout the work area
