We want to acknowledge and express our gratitude to the women who played pivotal roles in the story recounted below. Without you, Gomez Mill House would not have acquired this important piece of our history.

In April 1706 Queen Anne of England made Luis Moses Gomez a British subject by way of an Act of Denization. Thanks to Erica Jesselson and her son Michael, who purchased the Act at auction in June, 1998, this unique document became part of our permanent collection.

The story is dramatic: Asher Lewis Shane (1911-1991 ), an Englishman, was a collector whose interests focused on the history of European Jewry, especially in England. When his collection was put up for auction at Christie’s, rare book dealer David Block notified Gomez Mill House board member Barbara Tamerin. Our executive board, scattered in Washington, Westport, Rome and New York, immediately agreed to “go for it.”

Phone calls brought the Jesselsons, Frances Low, Barbara Tamerin and Herbert Robinson to the auction. Competitive bidding commenced. When Mrs. Jesselson’s bidder raised her bid repeatedly above all others, the room fell silent. The Jesselsons and Gomez Mill House had won. The Act was ours. Lewis Moses Gomez descendant Emma Lazarus is best known as the poet who wrote “The New Colossus,” the sonnet inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty…. "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

In honor of Women’s History Month, we will be spotlighting some of the remarkable women associated with Gomez Mill House owners and occupants. Our first remarkable woman is Rebecca Gomez, daughter-in-law of Luis Moses Gomez. Here is a 1780 ad promoting her NYC “chocolate manufactory, ” which carried a variety of imported foods and her “manufactured chocolate, warranteed free from any sediments and pure.” See link in bio for more info.

Standing atop the “mound” behind Gomez Mill House. An old stone-lined well is visible in the foreground. This is why the mound was left untouched when the rest of this area was excavated and removed to build Route 9 when that road was built in the 1930s. We are putting a plan in place for an archeological exploration of the well. Wonder what we will find!

When Millie Starin succeeded in having the “Gomez the Jew House” added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, she would not have known that NY State Parks and Recreation Commissioner Orin Lehman (see signature) was related to Joseph F. Cullman, 3rd, an 8th-generation descendant of Luis Moses Gomez who became the first Chairman of the nonprofit Foundation which purchased the house more than 10 years later.

Last week, we posted a photo of the iconic Gomez Mill House front door. Here is the original key to that door as presented to Joseph F. Cullman, 3rd, the first GMH Foundation Board Chairman and my grandfather, along with a heartwarming letter in which she shares her warm memories his sister, Nan Cullman Boas. Millie, Nan, and Joe - just three of the many Gomez Mill House pioneers whose life stories are intertwined with the colorful history of this unique Hudson Valley landmark.
