🚨 Public Safety Notice 🚨

As the Carnival 🎡 is underway, we ask all motorists to use extra caution and remain alert for pedestrians crossing the roadway.

Please slow down and come to a complete stop for individuals using designated crosswalks. The safety of our residents, families, and visitors is our top priority.

This serves as a warning: Any driver who fails to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk, or who drives through or around stopped traffic at a crosswalk, may be cited and fined in accordance with West Virginia State Code, which is attached for reference.

We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to keeping our community safe. Thank you, and have a safe and enjoyable evening.

Under West Virginia Code §17C-10-2, motorists must slow down or stop to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing within a marked or unmarked crosswalk, provided the pedestrian is on the vehicle's half of the road or close enough to be in danger.Key Rules for Drivers in West VirginiaThe "Half-Road" Rule: Drivers must yield if the pedestrian is on their side of the roadway or is approaching so closely from the opposite side that they are in immediate danger.Prohibition on Passing: If a vehicle has stopped at a marked or unmarked crosswalk to let a pedestrian cross, any vehicle approaching from the rear is prohibited from passing the stopped car.Sudden Movements: Pedestrians cannot suddenly leave a curb or safe zone and walk or run directly into the path of a moving vehicle that is too close for the driver to yield.Due Care: Even outside of designated crosswalks, West Virginia Code §17C-10-4 requires drivers to exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians, sound their horns when necessary, and take proper precautions around children or incapacitated individuals.

A quick message from Code Enforcement.

Dear Marmet Residents,

As we continue working together to keep the Town of Marmet looking its best, I would like to share an important reminder regarding property maintenance notices.

• If you receive a notice regarding high grass or property maintenance after the issue has already been corrected, please feel free to disregard the notice. Due to mailing times, some letters may arrive after the property has been brought into compliance. You may reference the date located in the top right corner of the letter to see when it was mailed.

• Please understand that all property maintenance notices are issued fairly and uniformly. Every property owner and resident is held to the same standards to ensure consistency, fairness, and the overall appearance of our community.

The goal of Code Enforcement is not to create hardship for anyone, but to help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all residents. Your cooperation and support are greatly appreciated as we work together to keep Marmet a community we can all be proud of.

Respectfully,

D. Sears

Illegal drug activity doesn’t just harm the individuals involved, it tears at the fabric of our entire community. It fuels theft, violence, and puts innocent lives at risk, especially our children. What may seem like “someone else’s problem” today can quickly become a danger on your street, in your neighborhood, or at your doorstep.

The Marmet Police Department cannot fight this battle alone. It takes a united community, people willing to stand up, speak out, and protect what matters most.

If you see something, say something. Your voice could be the difference between prevention and tragedy. Every tip, every call, every message helps us take one more step toward a safer, stronger Marmet.

We are here to protect and serve but we need your help to do it effectively. Together, we can push back against the poison that threatens our town and build a safer future for everyone.
