NMU Department of Social Work

NMU Department of Social Work For students, alumni and friends of the NMU Social Work Department.

Northern Michigan University’s Baccalaureate Social Work (BSW) program was one of the first programs in Michigan to be accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in 1974. NMU’s program has played an integral role in helping the university achieve its mission by giving students the knowledge and experiences to “become productive citizens in the regional and global community.”

NMU's

Master of Social Work (MSW) program is an exciting opportunity for human services professionals to earn a graduate degree and take their careers to the next level. With a wide array of field placement opportunities across the Upper Peninsula, our flexible global campus option for distance students, and our options for clinical or macro concentration, we offer students an education that meets their individual career interests and learning needs. Our global campus option for distance students is zoom facilitated learning and synchronous with our traditional face to face courses! This is not a self-paced learning process and students will be integrated into the face-to-face classroom learning environment! This website is intended for information sharing among students, alumni, other practicing social workers, faculty and community agencies. Statements made here do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Northern Michigan University Department of Social Work or its faculty.

An exciting offering from one of our local MSW field sites: Outdoor Adventure Therapy Services!

Our very own Assistant Professor Rachel Holman, MS, LMSW, CAADC, CHAIS, ADS & MSW Student Grace Rieger, BS, 500 HR CYT, are co-facilitating a 6-week LGBTQIA+ affirming ecotherapy group. The group will meet weekly on Thursdays from 2:30–4:30 pm, starting September 17th.

Here is a bit about Rooted in Belonging:

Group Overview:

Do you find yourself longing for a version of your home that no longer exists? Has your sense of belonging to your identity, culture, or natural environment shifted over the past years? Our 6-week “Rooted in Wellbeing” group seeks to explore how nature integration, q***r community building, & a connection to our more-than-human kin can empower our sense of belonging in an ever-changing world. As we sit with the degradation of human rights & environmental wellbeing, we want to challenge the narrative that we remain without power. Alternatively, we will call upon you to examine how you are navigating unprecedented political, cultural, and environmental stress and how WE can find ways to lean into community, embodiment, and resilience.

What to Expect:

A six-week closed psychoeducational group designed to support LGBTQIA+ folks navigating ecological stress. This space will be a small, intimate setting that allows for voices to be heard and shared. Each week we will meet at a different outdoor location around Marquette. Expect routine and novel weekly experiences that integrate interpersonal & intrapersonal reflection and processing.
