Thanks to all of you who came out to our Hands-On Mushroom Growing Workshop with Great Lakes Mushroom Company last night! We had an amazing and educational evening learning about the ecology of mushrooms, their health & medicinal benefits and different ways to grow them at home! Attendees were treated to mushroom coffee and oyster mushroom pizza, and everyone got to inoculate a grow kit to take with them! A big thank you to Justin and Tiffany for bringing this workshop to the U.P. and sharing your passion and expertise!

Is fall a good time to plant perennials? There are many reasons that fall is a GREAT time to plant your native wildflowers and grasses! Here are some reasons why:

🌱Warm soils
🌱Shorter days
🌱Less w**d competition

Shorter, cooler days mean less stress on plants. Less stress makes growing roots easier, so fall is a great time for root development! Roots will continue to grow in the warm soil well into fall, leading to a more developed and robust root system next spring. A plants root system can double in growth in only 2 weeks! Also, the plants are entering dormancy this time of year, so all of their energy is going into the root system. This will prepare them to produce flowers and be more resilient to next year's summer heat🙂

Order your native wildflowers & grasses today! Not sure what to plant? We have pre-made garden kits for a variety of site conditions! Questions? Give us a call 906-251-3059 or email [email protected]🙂

🌿🌾🍎🌊July 17th is Conservation District Day in the State of Michigan and today we celebrate the hardworking and dedicated folks who help protect Michigan’s natural resources every day! Conservation Districts are unique in many ways, including being the only locally organized special unit of government who partners with Federal, State and County/Municipal entities to implement conservation practices on private land throughout the state.

At MCCD, our staff works diligently to provide Marquette County residents with advisement, programs and technical assistance to meet their conservation goals and visions. From forestry management, produce & agriculture safety, invasive species management, pollinator planning, wildlife & fisheries habitat to wetland mitigation, stream monitoring and environmental education – we are your local boots on the ground resource!

Check out some photos from the common milkw**d patch outside of our office! As you can see, the milkw**d has hosted quite a few monarch caterpillars this summer! We even spotted a chrysalis and are anxiously awaiting the transformation from pupa to adult🦋🦋🦋They are also providing nectar for countless bees and smell really nice too!

If you would like to create your own monarch butterfly habitat, we've got you covered! Our Fall Wildflower Sale is open for pre-orders, and we are offering 3 milkw**d species: common milkw**d, swamp milkw**d and butterfly milkw**d! So whatever site conditions, we have a milkw**d that will work for you! Questions? Give us a call 906-251-3059!
