Designed by the Marquette architectural firm Lovejoy and Demar, the Hotel Janzen was built in either 1890 or 1893. The railroad hotel was conveniently located near the Duluth, South shore and Atlantic Railway (DSS&A) Depot. The hotel had 34 rooms and was advertised as having modern features such as “hot and cold running water.”

In the summer of 1977, the hotel began receiving condemnation notices

for failing to meet health and safety standards. A fire in 1983 damaged the Janzen to the point that its demolition seemed likely. However, a newly formed committee called “Save the Janzen” and spearheaded by City Commissioner Robert Kulisheck renovated the building after raising $30,000 and receiving matching funds from the City of Marquette. The Janzen was purchased by the Save the Janzen Committee in January of 1984 from owner Doris M. Bullock and began operating as the as the non-profit Janzen House, a shelter “for potentially homeless people” in the Marquette area.

3rd Congratulations are in order for Sarah McClanathan, (far R), who received her Master of Social Work Degree (MSW) this past weekend from NMU. Sara completed her 1st year of MSW field studies providing Case Management last year at the Janzen House. During the past year (while doing her 2cd year of field studies for another agency), she assisted the Janzen House by becoming a board member. Sarah actually started service at the Janzen prior to grad school as a volunteer. She is pictured with (from L) Susan Payant (Janzen President), Olivia (2025 BSW Grad), and Emilie (Assistant Director, NMU BSW Grad). 👩‍🎓🎓🎓🎓

The Janzen House has been one agencies that receives a portion of the food collected by the Postal Workers during this event for over a decade. We have literally made, or added into, thousands of meals from these food items over the years.📫📬📭📭💌💌💌

Good Morning, again. Our Congratulations also go to Dan Atkins who graduated from the Bachelor of Social Work Program (BSW) at Northern Michigan University this weekend. Dan completed his Senior Field studies as a Case Manager at the Janzen House over the 2025-26 School Year. Dan focused assistance on many of the Veterans who call the Janzen House their home (while also helping everyone else out). Dan will be resuming his education at NMU this fall when he begins pursuing his Master of Social Work Degree. Our Thanks and Congratulations 🎉🎉🪅🪅🎊🎊👨‍🎓😄

Our Thanks to Don Fassbender (L), pictured with Janzen House Assistant Director Emilie Rake (Center) and his brother Dan Fassbender (L)----Don was representing Great Lakes Scuba Divers club, and the boxes contain 50 Lawry's Pasties which the club was donating to the Janzen House from a fundraiser they held to assist the club with diving down to the bottom of Marquette's Lower Harbor to clean up garbage and debris. The club allowed donors to purchase pasties and eat them, OR provide those items to both the Janzen House and the Women's Center in Marquette. Thank you again for keeping the bottom drawer of the Lower Harbor Clean, for taking the time on the weekend to bring us 50 frozen pasties, and thank you to the donors who redirected them our way as gifts.

The Janzen House would like to thank NMU students (from L) Laney, Abbey and Ari for bringing us 12 "Tie" blankets. The group they are representing, the NMU Volunteer Center made them last week. The Volunteer Center (among other contributions to the Marquette community) coordinates "Make a Difference Day." Thank-you again to all the students who made the quilts. 🙂

Thanks to our staff Mike P who went out foraging this afternoon and brought back everything to make a homemade cream of tomato hotdog pasta soup---and spending the hour + 1/2 to make a huge vat of it. 🍅🍅🍅🌭🌭🌭
